Various delays meant I didn't arrive until 6pm and fished until 9pm. Stream was higher than I remember and a little coloured. Not much movement, saw perhaps 4 rises to naturals (a few large-ish upwings, unsure of species, drifting off for the first 90 mins), but a CDC pale watery generated more interest taking 3 and bringing up a handful more to splash at it. First was 5", next two about 12", really excellent colours and looking healthy, all released.
This is a lovely stretch of water with decent variety and the fields on the left bank are particularly lovely at the moment, tall grass full of wild flowers. Tall vegetation along large parts of the bank make a sneaky approach fairly easy and there's a lot of tree cover for hot days. Casing in some sections is tricky, but who wants it easy all the time? I fished a 8' 2" 3wt, but only needed it in two places. Something a little shorter and lighter would have been fine.

Finally some half decent river conditions! Everything caught on nymphs even so. Lovely 2lb trout and a 1lb grayling made the day worthwhile.

River falling very slowly after heavy and persistent rain since 21st but still full and strong. Less coloured but not clear. 15 degs air was comfortable and a slow hatch of mayfly kept the swifts happy. Pressure 1004/5. No fish seen. One savage take from a good trout. Nil return for this very pleasing beat. We fished fly and span a 3 " black + gold minnow. Met by Terry Ward at start of day who advised, kindly, best approach. This 6 beat stretch will be excellent once water clears.

The river was quite fast and brown-at least it seemed to us on our first wild fly trip. I got one small trout on a nymph who swam away happily after being admired for a little bit.. My 12 year old son spent a good 20 mins trying to tempt a jumper onto a dry fly before a family of swans intervened. It's a beautiful stretch of river and the low return is a reflection of our inexperience rather than the place.

Beat:Lower Grywne Fawr
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:2
River was running clear but with a lot of water coming down from the reservoir. We fished alternately searching out the deeper runs and pools with heavily weighted nymphs as there was virtually nothing taking from the surface. Between us we had 4 fish over the 1lb and a cracker of 2+ from the top end of the beat in the early evening (we fished the beat in the morning and then retuned at tea time after fishing the upper Grywne Fawr beat after lunch. Rain kept off (suprisingly) and not much wind to worry us. Wading was very difficuly over the stones, a wading stick being essential.
