Beat:Glan-y-Cafn
Fishing:Salmon
No. of Anglers:1
Meathod used was "Wet salmon fly", no fish actually caught.
This was my first time salmon fishing and to me the river was ideal for fish to rest or run.
Glan-y-Cafn to my mind is superb and has fired me up for more visits here, plenty of brown trout in evidence should one want to switch.

Looks great. Typical Lugg with cloudy grey clear water and deep holes. We tried everything no real success. Costly for the beat in comparison to whats around. £15 would be nearer the mark but would try again, its in a special place. Saw Pied Flycatcher.

Fished from the the lower end of the beat upwards and managed six nice trout of 9 to 12 inches and four smaller 4 to 5 inchers. A beaded caddis pupa was the most successful fly. Great fun despite the rain.

Area:Reservoirs
Beat:Usk Reservoir
Fishing:Trout (Stillwater)
No. of Anglers:1
First time at Usk Reservoir. As water quite full, fishing was difficult in most areas due to tree cover. I can see the benefit of a boat permit. No fish showing on surface. No entomology needed as both fish taken deep on Di7 with foam sunrise blobs. Needs another effort when water warmer and fish higher.

Had a great day however no salmon caught, but we did get a follow from a very big fish at the bottom of Maddox. Good value for money and nice part of the river.

Area:Monnow
Beat:Skenfrith
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:1
After weeks of expectation the weather of course turned nasty.
Three hours in the cold drizzle and nothing to show for it but suddenly changed at about 1pm when a small hatch began and there was a rise right in front of me. Result, a 9" WBT and the first fish of the season.
Three fish (9-12" WBT) and one missed from a fast deep section with a boulder strewn bed then nothing except a dunking after a slip and a lost fly box drifting off downstream. A dry off and a cup of tea but nothing until about 4.30pm when rain stopped and it warmed up. Four fish rising in the upper section, two caught, the last and largest a fraction under 15" (possibly a stocked fish?). Had to leave before covering the last two fish. A classic roller coaster day.
All caught on grey duster and Adams parachute, all returned unharmed.
