Beautiful day! Got there just in time for the midday hatch. Trout rising but tricky fishing without waders [forgot them!]. A magical place to fish. I will return...with waders!

Another day of biting NE winds with strong gusts made for difficult conditions. River height and clarity were excellent. This was a first visit to this bear for both of us and we tried various methods inclduing spiders, nymphs and bugs. JG contacted an very big brown trout in the shallower margins on an upstream nmph. The fish was in the order of 2lbs and bore marks of a bird attack unfortunately.
At around 1pm a terrific hatch of fly began mainly LDO's and plenty of March Browns which were super to see. Just an odd fish showed interest in what was a brilliant hatch spoiled I guess by the weather. Dry flies failed to produce any response with the fish picking just an odd fly out of the wealth of fly available.
Lovely beat - will return when this awful weather disappears.

Fly fishing, 2 hours at mud pool and 1 hour at the next 2 beats upriver. Sinking and sub-surface fly/nymph patterns around smaller boulders and under branches where possible. No fish taken.

Lovely spot no fish seen, walked the whole beat, perhaps to cold still, river clear, no sign of nymps etc.

Seriously tough fishing thanks to a hard and seriously cold easterly wind blowing upstream. Oh and the fact that I seemed to startle a few fishing cormorants whilst working my way upstream. Not surprisingly there were no hatches and certainly nothing really in the way of surface activity. Using nymphs I worked pretty much the entire beat but to no avail. Then, with only a few casts left before it got too dark to fish I spotted the smallest of rises from under the railway bridge. Assuming it to be a small trout and out of sheer desperation I switched to a small dry and had a go. After many ignored attempts i must have fooled the fish into thinking a small hatch was taking place as I eventually had a take. To my surprise it wasn't a small trout but a lovely 16 inch oos grayling which was gently unhooked and quickly returned. Shame there were no trout but still a nice way to end such a demanding day. Cheers as always WUF for your advice.
