The day before was warm and may well have been the ideal early season conditions. On my visit the wind had a bit of a chill to it so hatches were thin on the ground. Only saw two upwings lift off the water during the warmest part of the day. Did see a couple of fish rise to something at the surface. Tried emergers but only had one splash at the fly. Gave nymphs a try and had one follow that I saw. It was good to be out and I'll certainly return.

Loads of fish caught all day up to 2lbs in some decent water. Shame they were mainly very poor quality stocked fish though, lots of fins missing and rubbed ddown tails. With the number of juvenile wild fish in the tribs there is no reason to be filling the river with these ugly things.

Client who was Salmon fishing is only a beginner so it was more a case of getting use to Spey casting. I went Trout fishing and managed a couple of Brownies about 1 - 1 1/2 lbs + a couple of Salmon Parr about 6 inches in length.
Most enjoyable day, we'll be back!

Started late in the day due to a work commitment that cropped up, funny how work has a nasty habit of ruining a good life. Got going around 1.00 and sent off up stream into what started to resemble an assault course (I've seen less fences on a race course). Around every bend it seemed there were fences across the river and I started to get a tad irritated with them after a while. Apart from the fences the water reminded me of the brook I fished as a kid in wellies with a net.
I managed to catch 9 trout between 7 to 12 inches. Packed up around 5 ish when I came across a coppicing party chain sawing and burning a scene reminiscent of apocalypse now
if it was your people then you really should block the day out

The river was in excellent condition, running full and clean. I took my first fish of the season off the top of the pool behind the weir on a Klinkhammer. Had another in similar circumstances later in the morning on the upper half of the beat. Four other trout came to a weighted Hare's Ear, all 7-12". After lunch it became breezy so I gave up and pottered home more than satisfied.

Still a bit early for the Escley, with just a trickle of flies (grannom, LDO's and medium olives)and nothing rising. Armed with a 3 wt rod and plenty of food on my back I set off.
The first half of the beat has 4 or 5 fallen trees, making some of the better pools unfishable. It's worth persevering as the top half of the beat is magical. Persisted with dries all day, despite knowing nymphing would be more successful. Rewarded with 4 wbt, 1 tiddler, 3 around 9"-12". Successful fly was CDC emerger.
It took me 7 hours to fish the full length and yomp back to my car. At times a bit of a scramble. Hugely enjoyable, back next month.
Worth noting, parking is a about 400 yards from Longtown Post Office / Shop.
