Area:Irfon & Ithon
Beat:Aberbwtran
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:1
4 x grayling 14-17 inches, Grayling Steel Blue, John Storey and Hare's Ear, size 18. Jon Beer once said to me: "The thing about Aberbwtran is that it's really only one pool." That's one way of looking at it and certainly it isn't a full day's fishing - more like a couple of hours which could be combined with another wild stream booking. But it's certainly a very good pool. There are also some shallow gravel flats and a fast gutter at the bottom for those who like to search the gutters. On this day, the grayling were in a diffident mood, so it all took a while. I fished a dry fly to the very few rises which occurred in between showers (which weren't supposed to happen according to the forecast I looked at). In between casting I sat on the bank resting the pool. If I was Mr Crabtree I would have smoked my pipe. All very relaxing.

Beat:Goodrich Court
Fishing:Salmon
No. of Anglers:2
You did warn us that access to the upper part of the beat had been reported as 'difficult'. That is certainly true, if the river had been higher then it could have been dangerous to exit the river in many locations. At the height we had on Saturday it was ok as you could wade large sections of the river and walk back against the flow when necessary.

Beat:Wyastone Leys
Fishing:Coarse

A totally blank date: not even a decent bite! The highlight of my day was watching a sparrowhawk unsuccesfully chase a small bird. Lots of canoes and people on the footpath, but I don't think this explained my lack of success.

Fished very slow for Middle Hill. Been there a lot of times, this time they didn't turn up till 4.45 and then only 3 bites. Wasn't our day with only one landed.

Beat:Caradoc
Fishing:All Species (in season)
No. of Anglers:3
River very very low. Tried a number of swims throughout and caught a lot of weed and not a lot else. Was slightly peeved to find the beach section already being fished from the other side via syndicate water. The idea was to pay the higher fee and have the whole stretch to ourselves. Undoubtedly a good looking piece of river and would try again with higher water levels.
WUF Note: Caradoc is single (right) bank fishing only as stated in the Passport brochure and on the website. If double bank fishing is a requirement, please contact us on 01874 711 714 to find out which beats would suit.
