Decided to have one last try for grayling before the end of the season, long trotting with maggots. I started at the lower end of the beat, just upstream from the church (Church Catch pool), but couldn't find any fish. I then worked my way up through the wood (quite boggy on the path at this time of year). I again couldn't find any grayling but did catch a 1.75lb brown trout (in reasonable condition for out-of-season) from Hendre Pool. I then went up to the meadow and worked my way down the gravel flats from the island (Grandstand). I finally managed to find some grayling at the lower end of this straight run. I caught two, the largest a beautifully conditioned 40cm (1.75lb) fish. I suspect the grayling are shoaling up now so it would be good to hear where they're concentrated in other people's catch returns. The field by the church is probably too soft to park in now until the weather dries out. Even with 4WD I had problems by the gate. Great day out - thanks WUF.

2 grayling caught in the pool as you enter the river, the water level prety much the same as I last visted in September but again you can see how high it has been in recent weeks. This is a nice quiet stretch but is a bit of a walk to the river.

Beat:Holme Lacy 3 and Lechmere's Ley

Fishing:Coarse

I have just returned from a stay at the Holme Lacy Hotel. Prior to our break I booked a day's fishing at Holme Lacy 3 beat via The Wye and Usk Foundation.
I would like to thank you for a good day on the river - even though river conditions were difficult I managed to catch. This was my first experience of using your foundation's services and I think it is excellent. I hope you will also pass on my thanks to your ghillie Colin Richardson who was very welcoming and helpful - a real gentleman who knows his stuff - and an asset to your Passport Scheme.

No fish caught, river ar reasonable level. Looks as though they have been quite high due to the recent floods, weather gorgeous for February, however banks extremely muddy and slippery. The river is a bit boring all pretty much the same.

Beat:The Arrow, Court of Noke Fishery

Fished for 3 hours without any takes. River still fairly high making wading and access difficult and practically impossible to cross in thigh waders (almost went for swim when I tried). Saw a heron and a pheasant.

I chose this beat as it was close to the M4 and should have headed for the upper Wye. Looks like it would be a very interesting fishery in summer but the conditions made it very difficult to fish with a fly rod.

16 x grayling 12-17 inches, 1 x chub around 2.5 pounds, long trotting. Snow showers and a very strong cold gale - river was rising again during the afternoon and slightly coloured, 0.60 - 0.69 on the Cilmery gauge. It would nice to have fished one of the other beats on my winter "to-do" list, but yet again this was about the only one with water at a reasonable level for fishing. The main Wye is still very high.

The River was still in flood and the colour of strong tea! Tried for Barbel & Pike in any slack water we could find but no joy. Lovely stretch and look forward to returning once the River has returned to normal levels. Thanks.
