10 Barbel all on feeder fished pellets. Extra water on but dropping not rising. Lots of fish in the swim and if fished hard would produce as many fish as you wanted, I'm sure. We fished on the right hand bank (facing downstream) about 50 yards down from the bridge. There's a nice run of smooth water against the bank and a crease about 20yards out where it joins the shallower more turbulent flow of mid river. If you hit the crease right on the head you were guaranteed a Barbel in the 3-6lb region. Tremendous fights in the heavy flow.

River conditions perfect but only managed to catch 1 barbel around 6lb on pellet. I only managed to fish in the afternoon and it was very hot and sunny.
It is a lovely stretch of river and I will return to fish it again early morning and late evening when I'm sure it will be more productive.

Fishing:Trout (River)

I arrived on the water mid-morning to bright sunshine and gin clear water. I chose to fish with a 6'4 rod and 2lb leader and size 16 klinkhammer black bodie and a size 18 goldhead fished New Zealand style. The results were instant landing a dozen or so grayling to 2lb and losing a nice trout at the net, all to the goldhead. The best performing pool for me was where the lane and river meet. The one gripe is that I could find no beat signage to mark lower and upper limits so as not to stray. The fishing is not easy but they are there.

Barbel - 9lb 2oz, 7lb 15oz, 7lb 8oz, 6lb 9oz, 5lb 2oz. Chub 3lb 12oz, Eel 2lb 2oz.
All on Sonubaits elliptical pellet with soaked pellets in a feeder. The river was still fairly heavily in flow and travelling debris a problem but a good short session and the first time I've caught barbel, so there's a result!

Fished the top half of the beat without success in the morning, nothing seen. Moved down to the Wood stream and then caught and released a slightly colouring 13 1/2 pound cock fish from the Bridge Stream. Gold Willie Gunn Tube. Good company from the other rods. Could have done with one of them at the net and camera.Water high, but clearing fast.

6 small trout and a 3-4lb grilse in the morning. A 15lbs salmon from infront the lodge at 2pm in the afternoon. The salmon was marginally bigger than those landed by the other rods who both also landed fine fish. A great day out.

Enjoyed andy's company for much of the day. Sorry I missed his fish. back on the river next week. A very enjoyable day. A caravanner made me a lovely cup of tea!

Fishing:Salmon

No salmon seen or caught all day. Probably the nicest Usk beat I have yet fished. I worked my way down the bottom half firstly and managed one trout (released), which took an orange Ally's. The owner had mentioned some salmon being in the Top Pool recently and I intended to fish there in the evening. A pair of otters had arrived before me and were digging for worms and splashing around right over the salmon lies so I called it a day at 8pm.

Water was still a little coloured but at a good level for the upper part of the beat. One salmon 15lb at the tail of Rock Pool on size 8 Boyo. Fish was a slightly coloured cock. Saw salmon in Ty Mawr above the Gravel Catch but did not meet any others. Very enjoyable day.
