Fishing:Trout (River)

I started fishing around 11am approximately 150 upstream from the bridge. The entire beat has limited river access due to fairly steep banks and trees. Despite nearly 36 hours of dry weather, they river was still fairly colored. I primarily fished a large adams or stimulator with a suspended hare's ear or light colored emerger. I did however try a various combinations of lower water column nymphs as well as streamers. I only landed one 8 inch Brown trout, and very few missed strikes. I noticed some nice mayfly and BWO hatches throughout the day but only saw one fish (10-12 inch) rise near the top of the beat. I suspect that with a little clearer water and lower flows this could be a pretty productive stretch of river.

Anyway, despite my poor results after 7 hours of fishing...ANY DAY ON THE RIVER BEATS A DAY AT WORK!

My wife and I stayed at the Old Storehouse, 2.5 miles South of Brecon. The place is very homely and Peter takes top notch care of his guests. We hope to return soon.

Fished at the top end myself. Took 12 chub to 3lbs and caught 4 barbel to 9lbs. Lost 4 getting 12lbs line snapped.
Of the others, one caught similar quantity near the islands, biggest barbel 8lbs.
One guy blanked, and the other caught chub only, biggest 3.5lbs.

Fished downstream of the orchard. I had 4 barbel and B. had 3, all a good stamp of fish. Interesting swims, several feet up and strong current. Easy access although downstream section is headheight with thistles and nettles. Shame about the cattle and the big bull. A WUF gem.

An afternoon session with weather warm, cloudy and wet; water very high, 2 foot 6 on Llanstephan gauge and rising, but relatively clear. Tried with the spinning rod and lost one very strong fish hooked on the tail of the Boat Pool when it just decided it wanted to go back to the sea - a quite irresistible run downstream. (Note to self: ask regular angler Brian Skinner how on earth he managed to get a fish hooked on this spot last week back after it had already gone down through the bridge. And what he would have done if it came back through a different arch from the one it went down through?)

After that excitement, a 29 inch hen fish taken and released from the House Pool. A nice, fresh 2 sea winter fish.

Plus one large predatory chub which decided to bite a Flying C.

On my own as unfortunately my pal went down with shingles. Wet day with lots of water in the river. Didn't stay late but managed 2 chub and a barbel. Ian met me and gave me a friendly and helpful introduction. Look forward to coming back to this beautiful stretch in proper Summer.

River high and dirty but holding steady. There are a number of near bank creases and a big slack at the bottom end which make it an ideal floodwater venue. I had eight barbel to 8lbs on pellet and 10mm boiles. Although they made fishing with meat impossible it was good to see eels coming out - they make great otter grub!
