Very cold morning, but then it go gradually warmer from lunchtime onwards and the fly life and trout responded well. I started early in the morning and had hooked and lost two nice fish by midday although very little sign of life. Resumed fishing around 1pm when it got a bit warmer and various upwings made an appearance. Some fish started to rise and also take nymphs. I ended up having a wonderful afternoon after a disappointing morning. Five lovely fish landed including one lunker of 3.5lb! The large fish put up a battle royal on 7X, but came in over the net after around a much gutter rubbing and shooting up and down the pool. Lovely birdsong from the trees and a lovely day on the Usk. I even had to man handle a live lamb out of the river which had somehow got stuck - needless to say the lamb was very relieved to run back to mother! Thank you WUF!

Back in the same area as yesterday as river still well up and coloured like Monday. Today was a lovely hot sunny day. The fish were a bit more cautious today and as a result smaller baits were required. I ended up catching 6 barbel and 1 large dace which was very satisfying under the circumstances so all in all a great start to the season.
Once again a very big thank you to all at WUF who do such a fantastic job gaining access to these fabulous waters.

Overcast day with very little fly life until around 3.30pm. Some surface activity thereafter. Water slightly coloured. Constant changes between dry and nymph landed us 5 fish to hand, with best fish circa 11-12". 3 fish came from deeper runs on pheasant tail beadhead nymph, and the other 2 off Klink emergers. Plenty missed takes off the surface. All fish released.

Beat 5. River at an ideal height and clear, rose perhaps 2" during the day. Fished through beautifully- even Locksters pool could be covered with the fly. Plenty of trout activity on Yellow Mays and the odd Mayfly. 2 fish showed. One draw on the reel but nothing on the lift (how do they do that?). 4 wbt and 2 Shad. A fantastic days fishing but-no Salmon!

Nil return. The river was quite murky and probably still a bit too high. I did provoke one salmon into jumping in the Maddox as dusk was falling but no luck. A few fish showed throughout the day.

Fishing beat with 3 friends. Huge expanse of water after the day before on Escley. River dropping during the day but challenging wading in parts - great care and a stick needed. Only 2 fish - 1 WBT and 1 Grayling. Hatching (and rising) sporadic and in tune with the wind..

No fish caught or seen all day. Nice upland stream though in a nice picturesque valley. Fish must be in there somewhere!

High water but running good colour. No fish caught or seen. Heavy canoe traffic in my defense. Thank you WUF.
