Fishing:Winter Grayling

First time fishing Colonel's water and had an amazing day. Really nice beat with a good range of water suitable for both dry's and nymphs. Managed to catch my first ever grayling, followed by my second which weighed in at a pound and three quarters, giving a great fight on my light weight euro nymph setup. Unfortunately (can't believe I'm writing this) the beat is full of trout willing to take a nymph. Ended the day with 19 trout and 2 grayling with nearly all the fish taken on nymphs fished euro style. The deeper pools/runs were most productive with a couple of fish caught in the faster riffles. River was .053m on the Cilmery gauge and very clear.

Fished 1530-1830 in lower field as the other anglers booked on were (as expected) parked by the rubbish tip on top field. Luckily I came with a plan. Fished the third swim down the lower field as the first two are still a bit too shallow and pacy with this much water on. The river looked magnificent - still quite coloured but dropping after the rain. I fished groundbait feeder with paste wrapped 14mm halibut pellet on the hook. Chub number one came first cast and was a tiddler. Chub number two shortly after and was a decent one, around 4lb. Fish three was hooked within the first hour also and went off like a steam train. Hook pull sadly. A few minutes later and a very positive drop back which resulted in barbel number one. At a guess around the 6lb mark and fin perfect. Another decent chevin followed around 1700. About 1715 a roaring, rod bouncing take and after a great scrap barbel number two was in the net. A shade bigger, perhaps 7lbs. It went weirdly quiet after this although the light dropped and the river looked so good for a few more bites. Packed up at 1830 very happy to have taken the afternoon off work.

River carrying extra water, 0.63 on the Byton gauge when checked at 7am, but fining off and with some colour. The grayling were in the 9-11 inches range, pink beaded nymph accounting for most.

water looked much better than it actually fished...a bit too much pace to comfortably control a float through ....few small chub from the margins in the morning and then some better sized fish from rolling a lump of pepperami around in the choppy water where the Lugg comes in

Between us we fished eight swims searching for barbel and failed miserably. Most of the chub were caught on meat but we tried a range of pellets and boilies with feeders or straight leads and nothing could get the barbel interested today it would seem.

Cold night and water temperatures fell. Tricky morning but once the fish were located and the sun warmed things up a bit bites came steadily into the evening.
