River level has dropped a fair bit since last week and fish are now very easily spooked! Nothing rising during the day so back to the motor and up to the Bridge Inn mid afternoon for some of their finest but perhaps lingered too long?! The evening saw some mayfly spinner on the go and we managed 5 very good fish between the two of us before the light went. Great day down by the river as per usual

THE GOOD: Fished sections upstream of house and caught 6 good trout up to 14in in first 1 1/2 hours.
THE BAD: Tried to find the next wade-able section upstream of this section. No paths, no markers, broken stile. Expensive waders at risk of tearing. Very hot day so got very sweaty hacking through the undergrowth. Couldn't find the next section and after 1/2 hour gave up and had lunch.
Decided I wouldn't bother with the upstream section and left.
One day with a brush-cutter and a few coloured sticks as markers would transform this fishery into the state it deserves. I will not be returning to this beat when there are so many better beats available.

2 x trout. Gold head GRHE. Hot,bright sunny day.
A dead hen salmon lay on her side on the bottom of the river about 15m inside the first field below the footpath.
Below the rapids. There was no obvious damage/disease and her tail fin was in good condition. There was no bloating or predation so it seemed a recent death. No other signs of fish distress or death.

Two rods fished all day in hot sunshine for a total catch of one 7 inch trout. A beautiful beat but fish were simply not responding in the hot weather.

5 x trout 8-12 inches. I arrived late afternoon, but still very hot with bright, blazing sun, and nothing happened till after 8 in the evening. A few taken - and quite a few more missed - on a Little Dark Watchet spider fished through the runs.

Water still .55m and clear. Fished for trout throughout beat. John had 4 on the spiders but none for me until late on when there was a large mayfly hatch and landed 2 at 1lb 9oz and another at 1lb 4 oz. The latter was kept as gills damaged.
John landed 7 on the spiders from 6oz to 1lb 4 oz. All returned
Silly season has just started!!

A beautiful day on a beautiful river – challenging fishing though and only managed one wbt and one grayling of any size all day. Both on goldhead PTN.
