29 x grayling 10-15 inches, 4 x out of season trout 10-13 inches, trotting with centrepin and Avon float. Rod icing until midday and it wasn't all that much warmer during the afternoon. It's a moot point what to do about rod ring icing. If the river itself isn't too cold, as today, it's usually possible to immerse the rod tip to melt the ice, then give the rod a tap and a shake to get the water off as the float goes on its way. If the river temperature goes right down to 4 degrees or so (remember last year), then nothing works except manual deicing. This time, the OOS trout all looked like post-spawners, which is as it should be. The grayling today were mostly junior class fish of 12-13 inches. One really nice one one hooked just before dusk took 5 minutes to play up against the current, then shed the hook at the last moment as I got ready with the net. Ah well....

I fished the lower limit of this beat in the Rock Pool area and focused my efforts on catching a pike. The river conditions were good and I was hopeful of a few fish but only managed 1 pike of approx 5-6Lb.
The countryside here is stunning and I would definately return again and a real plus point was the ease of access as parking just a 50yd walk from the river.

After a fair walk down to the fishery we arrived at a long picturesque stretch of river with plenty of choice of accessible pegs. Often the deep water is on the near bank which avoids the need for long casts. It was a cold day, the overnight frost hanging on well into the morning and although I caught chub right from the start, the pike were on the rampage and I lost three hooklengths to the voracious predators chasing the fish and bait.
We both moved, George well downstream to a great looking glide ending under a big tree where he landed 5 good sized chub. I moved back to the weir pool and caught another 5 chub on bread flake.
A pleasant day's fishing in lovely surroundings which will be a must for barbel in the summer.

What a beautiful beat! Arrived early to get a full days fishing in and we were not dissappointed. 9 Good sized graying to 15" and 3 hard fighting brownies. We had to work hard for them in the ice cold water, but it was worth it. All fish taken on heavy beaded bugs bounced across the bottom. We also got a fleeting visit from an otter!!! Thank you for a great day.
