Beat:The Eyton Beat
Fishing:Winter Grayling
No. of Anglers:1
Impossible to fish. Howling gale, driving rain and flooded river! The river was too high to access any of the upstream section above the top weir and very fast and murky below the top weir with no wading access due to flood water. Note that the gauge was showing 1ft 10in.

Area:Monnow
Beat:The River Dore, Chanstone Court
Fishing:Winter Grayling
No. of Anglers:2
Despite the main rivers being well up and coloured the Dore at Chanstone Court was running clear, at a good level and from the bridge close to the parking spot looked very 'fishy'! It therefore gave us the opportunity of successfully "using up" our accumulated 'excess' Vouchers before the year end.
However the grayling of the Dore were not very obliging today - one rod caught an 8" and a 10" grayling on Pink Shrimp patterns while the other failed to score.
If you enjoy small stream fishing all-year-round this is a beat well worth considering. Very noticeable recent clearance work (vmts to WUF) has made this a delightful proposition but beware the deep pools especially upstream from the bridge!

Beat:Ty Newydd
Fishing:Winter Grayling

Two good takes all day but no sight of a silver scale. Both fish were tempted with a heavily weighted Hares Ear nymph fished across and down the margins. River running clear but fast and high, difficult to know where to start. Very windy and chilly wading.

Beat:The Eyton Beat

Water was well up and coloured, that added to strong winds made for a difficult day with no fish caught. A couple of large Grayling made splashy rises but were impossible to cover due to the fast flow. Other than that it is a lovely stretch of water and I look forward to returning under more hospitable conditions.

I had been watching the river levels in order to make sure my trip was not a wasted one. As it was the river was running high but fishable. I walked the stretch looking for quieter water where I might catch pike. There were few slacks dispite the salmon groynes. The largest slack is below the island near the downstream boundary but is inaccessible from the bank due to trees. I blanked!

15 chub on meat and cheese paste. River was about 2' higher than previous visits but clear. Next time we fish this beat we will defiantly take maggots, I think it could be even better. Also average size of fish were bigger than other visits, most 4-5lb.

Beat:How Caple Court

Water level was up by 3 feet according to land owner. Fished the lower point of the beat. It is deeper and slower. The main current was quite fast, my 150g lead couldn't hold bottom. Caught 4 chub biggest about 5lb, 2 came on luncheon meat and 2 on cheese paste towards the end of the session. All in all memorable days fishing.
