Three fantastic days fishing on this delightful beat. I explored the bottom end of the beat which Don explained gets less angling pressure. From the tail of the island (by the very handily placed pub), the bottom end of this beat comprises a series of, (if not one continuous long), middle river/far bank runs, mainly shallow but with one or two deeper holes. There were fish throughout in as little as 18ins of water.
Over three days I caught 22 barbel and numerous chub to about 5lb, (although mostly 1lb to 3lb), from numerous different spots. Apart from one stunning little barbel of about 12oz the barbel were mostly (estimated) in the 4lb to 7lb class with a couple (estimated) between 8lb and 9lb. The only two I weighed were 9lb 10oz and 10lb 12oz. All the fish were in stunning condition and fought like all Wye barbel do, which with the added assistance of the strong flow, and plenty of snags made for exciting fishing. All fish caught touch ledgering on sweetcorn, spam and pellets.

When you add in the gorgeous scenery, and the plentiful and varied wildlife you will not be surprised to know that I intend to visit this beat again! Thanks to Don and Rudi, and all at the WUF.

33 x grayling 7-14 inches, 25 x trout 6-13 inches, 1 x small chub. Fishing ahead of predicted heavy rain, this was a rather drizzly cold day with not much rising, and spiders were working much better than dry fly. Although I know very well there are plenty of 16 inch plus grayling on this beat, it was the junior class around 10-12 inches which were mostly putting in an appearance this time. Very acceptable, but not quite needing the net! A couple of heavy trout were lost during the morning. Plus there was an interesting experience on what was literally planned to be the last cast of the day. Using a weighted nymph, I hooked a modest trout from a piece of pocket water, only to have it immediately attacked by what is certainly the largest predatory brown trout I have seen in the Wye. I got a very good view, and there was no doubt about the sinister intentions; the big fellow wasn't just stalking the fish being played, but made three or four attempts to disable it by biting from the tail end as it went back and forth in front of me. When the agressor finally gave up, I got the "prey fish" into the net and measured it as 13 inches exactly.

In marked contrast to the previous day's report I only managed to hook 2 samll Brownies (having used every technique known to man) on PTNs. Perhaps the sultry conditions were playing a part?

Despite the length of the stretch there are very few swims to choose from, however I chose the obvious one and landed 7 barbel to 9lb 6ozs which is my second best from the Wye.
Pellets were the successful bait.

**WUF note** This is a new beat and has not been open to coarse fishing before now - access and swims due to be improved this Autumn.

Grey, overcast morning with showers. Rain cleared through after lunch, with a cool breeze. Very occasional fish showing - three of which we managed to tempt on a size 18 Parachute Adams. We caught five further fish on size 16 tungsten headed PTNs the best of which was just under 3 lbs - the others ranged from 1/2-1lb.
This beat is always a delight to fish with so many varied pools and runs. Most success was from the faster water at the head of the runs.
