Area:Usk
Beat:Glan-y-Cafn
Fishing:Salmon
No. of Anglers:1
Beat is priced for Salmon or Trout fishing so I practised my Spey casting while wading downstream and changed over to a Trout rod on the way back upstream. All I got was practice on the way down, but two 12" WBT coming back both to Deer Hair Sedge and both returned to the water. Attractive beat, easily accessed, but some stiff currents which need a bit of care while traversing.

Area:Lower Wye
Beat:Courtfield
Fishing:Salmon
No. of Anglers:1
Mainly fished the lower part of the beat i.e from steps down to pub. Fish were showing all day albeit most were probably kelts. Had one well mended kelt 30'' plus a fresh cock fish of approx 25lb which slipped from the net before I could either photo or measure it. Both fish on red flying c with copper blade. Tried the wood section in the afternoon but did not even see any fish moving. Thanks to Don for the usual advice and encouragement.

Beat:
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:1
Many trout seen but none caught! Very tough, technical fishing due to small overgrown nature of beat. Have never used the bow and arrow cast so often. Minimal insect life seen on overcast day. Only 1 rising fish seen.

Area:Middle Wye
Beat:Aramstone
Fishing:Salmon
No. of Anglers:1
Gave this beat a go, after most on the Lower/Middle Wye seemed to be booked. Not sure how much this has been fished in the past. I was told not a great deal, and this would be born out by the banks and access to the water which can be a challenge.
To the fishing, which was excellent, plenty of fish moving and 2 Kelts around 30in and 32in caught, followed by a very fresh fish estimated around 8lbs. All caught spinning. Tried for a couple of hours on the fly, and had one good pull, which I did not connect with. Plenty of fish seen moving.

We had a most enjoyable day, but only a very well-mended kelt for our efforts caught on a conehead fly in the Vanstone Pool. A very nice part of the Wye to spend a days salmon fishing.
