Beat:Monnow Valley

Fishing:Trout (River)

The beat descriptions were good and accurate on both of the beats we fished, this one contrasted with the first day where access was easy, this was steep banks and long areas where you could not get to fish. Other rod from Denmark caught nothing although we looked at previous reports and used several of the suggestions on the reports. I used dry fly in the morning and was rewarded with a half-pound brownie. In the afternoon I swapped to a wet fly and had a hit almost immediately and took another brownie of the same weight. The one problem was that the abundance of wild life on the river meant that on several occasions I had drifted off watching numerous birds building nests wide range of fly life, what an experience, anyway back to the fishing. Had to walk a fair distance to the far end of the beat before I could get down to the water. It was well worth the walk as very soon I had a hit from the biggest brownie of the two days, weighed about pound and half but put up good fight took about five minutes to get him in. Shortly after took another half-pound on the drift down stream, made a total for the day of four.

River very low, cold windy day. No sign of fish or insect life. Total blank packed up after 3 hours. Such a difference to other days I have had on this beat. Pray for rain.

Beat:R23 Hindwell Brook at Knill

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:1

Low but flowing clear and the deep dubs well filled. Windy with little fly about apart from a few gnats, some E.danica mayfly and olive spinners. Very few fish rising and just four trout tempted to take some emerger patterns and black F Fly. Caught nothing on weighted nymphs and saw few spooked fish in the tails of the pools. I also saw one female goosander, no doubt having had an easy time of it in such clear and restricted water. Rather worrying.

Fished from 9am to 1pm - sporadic hatches in between the gusts of wind. Caught 6 brown trout to 12" all on copper john nymph. Stunning beat, easy wading, mouthwatering stream features. Must be some big fish lurking around.

Huge beat, lots of opportunity. Good mayfly hatches, had 8 trout to 10" in a very short session (1hr). Could have stayed all day and caught till my arm ached I reckon! Seemed to carry a good flow when all the other streams were suffering badly. e.g looked at the Escley and the Honddu first, ended up on the Dore - glad I did!

Fished as guest of the owner in the evening. Low water meant the 300m below bridge was easily wadeable and combined with a steady hatch of BWO's which brought most fish to the surface made for a memorable short session. Had fish on 1st and 2nd casts! Over next hour brought 9 more to hand most between 10" and 12" with a couple around 15". Lovely fishing.
