Beat:R1 The Upper Clochfaen

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:2

The river level had fallen back several feet from a few days ago but was still above summer level with a swift current.
Caught a few small brown trout using klinkhammer and nymph NZ style then as the fly passed under a willow branch a 15" grayling took the klinkhammer and as I brought it across the main flow of the river I saw a silver flash as another grayling, 12" this time took the nymph. I called to my son for help and after several minutes he managed to net them both at the same time !!
We fished on upstream picking up several more trout to about 10". After passing a stretch of very fast shallow water we saw a trout give away his position by rising just under the far bank. Second cast he took the nymph, turned and took off downstream into that fast water, I had to follow him down for about thirty yards before once again my son managed to slip the net under him from behind. Until then I didn't realise how big he was 20", my best wild brown by far.
In total 9 trout and 2 grayling between us to both dry and nymph all returned safely.
An afternoon to remember !!!

Beat:R34 - River Honddu - Stanton

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:1

With a large amount of water on the main rivers, headed over to the Honddu, which was in very good condition, without hardly any discernable change in the levels from the recent low conditions. Caught 5 x WBT largest around 13". Rose a very good fish in the pool below the Trout Farm, which snapped the leader, as I struck too hard rather than lifted into the fish and another one which I failed to hook near the start of the beat.

Beat:Skenfrith

Fishing:Trout (River)

None caught. Several rises and takes on the dry fly and then nymph. Typical late July conditions - ie, not much serious interest from the fish. It's a lovely stretch of water though.

Beat:Lyepole

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:1

Did not fish due to heavy rain.

But anyway, thanks for providing the facility to book online in advance. I am not familiar with the area and it is brilliant to be able to plan a small river beat in advance rather than having to find a random local shop (usually closed!) to buy permit or obtain map of water etc.

Hope to get a chance to visit the beat next time I'm in the area.

Fishing:Salmon

None caught. At least one fish seen. As the number of pools is limited, I think that 5 sections is too many for this beat.

Beat:R43 Dore at Chanstone Court

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:1

6 x trout 6 -12 inches. A difficult, hot, sticky afternoon, until it actually began to rain properly, after which a few fish began to rise at last, but they wanted a small fly. I was using Klinkhammer and Adams in size 18. A number of smaller upwings hatching and the odd mayfly still to be seen. It's remarkable how much more ranunculus is growing on this beat than last year - must be good, I suppose. Lost one good grayling, which came up from the bottom at the neck of a pool and gave a bit of a tussle before opening up a fine wire hook.

The beat is very, very, very overgrown, the opposite bank is dog walkers paradise, but the fish are there. 7 chub to 4.5 lbs lost several, great day.
