I fished Ashford House yesterday morning from 6.30 a.m. and saw very little fly. Apart from oncers there were very few rising fish and so we gave up at 1 p.m. My fishing buddy and I had only six fish (but one of 2.25lb) with most taken in running water rather than in the flats and pools, and all on a hare's ear emerger.
By way of contrast, I fished Ty Mawr on the Gwent Anglers water last Thursday evening late and Friday morning very early and had a lot of fish once they started rising. They rose for the last hour or so before dusk and, apart from the oncers, had pretty well stopped rising in the morning by 10 a.m. Fish mainly taken on mini-caddis pupa shuttlecock and small black shuttlecock midge.
Interestingly there appear to be no mini-caddis larva homes on the stones at Talybont whereas there must be billions at Ty Mawr - local species diversity never ceases to amaze me!

Me and my mate fished the beat for 4 days taking 20 barbel up to 8lb and 16 chub up to 5lb. We fished method feeders with 17mm halibut pellets. A little slow during the day when it was very hot. All in all a very enjoyable 4 days fishing.

10 x trout 6 -13 inches. Mostly small fish on various dries and spiders. A very hot, bright and difficult day with the water now extremely low. Spent some of the afternoon trying unsuccessfully to stalk chub on the shallows.
My own resolution while the weather stays like this is to concentrate on the late evenings on the main rivers, and spend the days on the shady small streams, some of which are fishing extremely well at the moment.

3 small browns on hares ear. Nice beat, pity about the working party that turned up just as I was stating to fish -trucks, quads, tractor with hydralic post rammer! All following me down the beat. You should have made a note on the web site, I would have chosen another beat, and it was my birthday too.
WUF note: Our sincere apologies to Mr Green. This was due to a last minute change to the habitat team work schedule.

10 x wild trout, 2 around 14-15 inches, most around 8-10 inches, Klinkhammer to begin and Hackle Mayfly later. A rather muddy river after showers the previous evening - the Monnow colours so easily these days - plus I had a photographer with me from Total Flyfisher so no pressure! But trout were prepared to rise and we had a very nice afternoon. The last of the mayfly for this year, I should think, and as usual I turned over and missed a couple of the larger ones.
