The Afan Valley Angling Club was founded in 1951 and offers a mix of Wild Brown Trout, Sewin and Salmon fishing on a small spate river, with access to various beats from PortTalbot, upstream to Duffrryn Rhondda.
The club is managed by a conservation-minded but progressive committee that has helped the river to recover from the ravages of the industrial age and coal era to the point that the river is bucking the trend with an ever-increasing salmon population. “Rising high in the mountains of Glamorganshire, the River Afan Flows through the once heavily industrialized Afan Valley before entering Swansea bay at Port Talbot.
Its history from 1147 to the present day is as turbulent as the river itself. Like all rivers in the South Wales valleys, it suffered the ravages of the industrial revolution, but has emerged today as a symbol of what can be achieved by a small band of dedicated men, unwilling to accept the legacy of the past and who were determined to restore their heritage”. – Ivor Lewis, author of The Afan fisheries.
Fishing Is allowed between the Afandale pool, Cymmer, and 20 yards above the Mansel Weir, Green Park Industrial Estate, Aberafan. Please note:- No fishing is allowed on the Corrwg & Gwynfi sections of the river.
Brown Trout Fishing permitted 1 hour before sunrise to 1 hour after sunset.
Night Fishing permitted for Salmon and Sea Trout.
Visitors are asked to park within the law showing consideration to locals residing within the catchment area.
