Struggled to find the correct entrance to fishery off the road - perhaps WUF could update their directions. Access is from gap in hedge (gates are permanently open) just as you come to the end of the double yellow lines). Fished the last concrete croy in a howling down stream wind. Float fishing a non starter, rods held high were bounced consistently and in danger of being blown off the rest. Tried legered meat, pellet (various sizes/combinations), cheese, sweetcorn and bread. May have had a knock after a couple of hours - only fished 2.30-6.30, when the cricket had finished and I was beaten.

1st rod 14 barbel averaging 7lb, 2nd rod 1 barbel and a clonking chub all caught on feeder and boillie tactics. Not sure about the price and we did have fishermen on the other side but they were not disturbing us.

I stayed at lucksall campsite the night before so was able to get to the beat by 6am. Having had a very successful session here the season before, i headed straight for the pylon run to begin with and had 3 decent chub in the first 3 casts, however bites then dried up completely. Very surprised not to have a barbel here. After a biteless hour, i then moved to the first croy and caught a chub straight away, then missed a few bites. Finally had a barbel there after an hour or so. I also trotted a float down from that croy and had a nice chub and then foul hooked a barbel which i got close enough to me to see the hook was clearly in its pectoral fin before it did a swimmers roll in front of me and shed the hook. Saved me a job! Unfortunately the wind then started to really push across the river from the far bank making float presentation difficult. I had a go from the second and third croys but save for one chub on the feeder these didn't seem as productive. I headed back to the campsite at 11.30 to pack up there and have some lunch and returned around 12.30. Heading back to the first croy i didn't have particularly high hopes given the time of day, however i was getting knocks and pulls on most casts and after a four or five failed attempts i hooked another chub. No mistaking the next bite as barbel no.2 was landed. Swim then went quiet so i decided to give the pylon run another go and was rewarded by a chub and then a final barbel. With the drive back to Oxford looming i decided to go at about 5pm, i'm sure I would have caught more if i'd stayed longer. Whilst far from the most prolific day I've had on the wye, this was one of the most rewarding as moving and ringing the changes seemed to pay off. Most of the fish came to hair-rigged 14mm halibut pellets with meat and corn also accounting for a couple of the chub. Such a well cared for beat, its always a pleasure to spend some time here, definitely one of my favourite stretches. Access track around the field was ok, i took it very easy and stopped a couple of times the first round just to check that the central track didn't contain any nasty surprises... great to be able to get the car all the way to the river.

Late afternoon session proved to be productive. Most chub caught on trotted meat and the barbel later on at dusk on ledgered pellet and hemp. Largest Chub was 5lb and barbel were 2lb, 5.2lb and 7.6lb. Absolutely cracking fish. Once they started to feed it was all out attack. All were strong and healthy looking which was reassuring to see.

River very low with a nice flow in various places. Chub kept us busy most of the day. All about 3 to 5lb and full of lice. Removed most of the lice before returning. Barbel came to play mid afternoon/early evening. All came in at 5 to 8lb and again full of lice. Third time on this beat and it has never let us down.

Fished lucky stones all day. Feeder fished between half and two thirds out.Had a few quiet spells, but when they wanted it had a bite every cast. Fair walk and not for anybody unfit. Lovely looking stretch though. Fished 10.00 till 16.30.

40 Chub
