Lots of lovely looking water and very few fish. Could’ve just been me but I’m not sure. I did manage to winkle a couple out but there weren’t fish where I expected to find them. Odd.

Fished The Maddox (the part accessible from the left bank), The Corner Stone (twice) and The Vanstone. No salmon encountered, although saw a largish (15lb+) resident at the bottom of The Vanstone, where I unintentionally caught several chub to about 4.5 lbs.

All the above pools fished the fly well and appeared to have more than enough depth to hold salmon (Ross gauge at about 20 cm). Water temp was 58F, with the air temp comfortably above it at about 64 F. Water clarity was reasonable for the Wye and the day was largely overcast (a little sunnier later on). Encouraging conditions, I thought.

I fished a couple of small coneheads off an intermediate tip. Fishing deeper to explore the depths of the gullies might have been a better option. Will be back.

Steady rising fish in shade and faster current where available through the day, with a hatch around midday when the cloud came in. Epic BWO spinner fall but trout very selective. Fish to 16" with a couple of better fish lost that will be recounted in pub trips to come...
