Another afternoon livin the dream !!!! Perfect weather and river looking perfect too ... parked up at half twelve .... a few upwings on the go, but the fish didn't really get going till half two in fairness... although I did tempt some wanting an early brunch with a size 18 iron blue!!! ..... lively smash takes in the faster water ... some tubby fish today too in a bag of fifteen ... sizes from six to eleven inches .... feisty Edw scrappers too !!! Lovely job !!
As the mayfly and olives started showing more the fish were looking up big time ... used my usual six foot, two weight ... great for here to be honest ... just dapping the dry in the fast stuff got a response !! Short accurate casts today won the fish !! Well , most anyway, still some long range releases!! In fact quite a few ...lol !!!
Got out hundred yards past that plush house on the right bank..... a fab few hours ... was actually quarter past five when i got out !!@ loved the afternoon ... fantastic .... Time for a mooch down into Rhayader and a scoop in The Crown me thinks!!! Weeeeell , be rude not to hey !!!

Having only fished a river once with a guide (Dinas) this was my first foray on my own. To cut a long story short I caught ….. nothing! ???? I did see a couple of fish rising but not very many at even through there was quite a lot of insect life from about 1pm onwards. I’m sure my inexperience didn’t help.
The beat itself is really nice. Some of the entry points to the river can be quite steep and need to negotiated with some caution. Also I was thankful that I had taken a wading staff as I find this very helpful.
I’m sure a more experienced angler would have had more success but I can quite safely say the 300 mile round trip was worth it and I’ll be back to the Usk

Fishing in the late morning and in the evening. Saw a lot of rising of smaller fish, but they didn't seem particularly interested in our flies. Finally caught a small trout in the very upper part of the beat.

Bright hot day. Plenty of smaller bugs about. Some fish rising sporadically through the day. Water lovely and clear . Only 2 takes on emergers and no hook ups I'm afraid. Richard the beat owner was kind enough to come and say hello and recommend flies. Will return.

Beat:Chanstone Court

Fishing:Trout (River)

Fished Chanstone Court for a couple of hrs each on the evenings of 16 and 17 May.

6 small BT, with one slightly better (about 8 or 9 inches). Mix of takes on the dry, a small klink, and nymphs. River was holding a suprising ammount of colour still, despite the dry week.

Fishing the Dore requires the skills of a stealth of Ninja, flexibility of a Gymnast and patience of a Monk. It's certainly one of the 'wilder' Wild Stream beats. Your waders will suffer, but the (small) fish shaped reward is all the more valuable having worked for it.

Early May seems to be the sweet spot, with abundant fly life and hungry fish but the line-snagging foliage only just getting going.

Prolific hatches of what I think were Large Dark Olives and Green Drake Mayflies. Perhaps Oliver Burch will offer an opinion in his monthly roundup?
