It had been probably 8-10 years since we last fished this beat. Appeared more difficult to find accessible swims that could be easily fished. A bit of judicious vegetation management and tree surgery wouldn't go amiss.
We fished the reed swim on the far bank and caught spasmodically throughout the day, 4 of the chub were less than 2lb with the other 6 between 3-5lb. Maggot or meat on straight lead or feeder.

Fished near the foot bridge. Caught a 10lb+ barbel near the rapids down stream of the foot bridge. Good shoal of chub upsteam of the rapids. Caught one barbel 7lb float fishing sitting on the ledge down stream of the foot bridge. You need a rope and spike to access the swims.

Seen this beat from the bridge several times but never fished it. Thought it would be similar to ty Newydd - not even close! Being a grayling only angler I was looking for some gravely spots, - there are none, its all boulders and bed rock! Walked nearly the entire beat, found only 2 or 3 spots that nearly fitted the bill ( small amounts of gravel between lots of boulders!) And I did manage to catch ok from them, but I did lose twice as many flies than I caught fish!

Pretty tough going today, but left happy after catching my first ever Barbel of 5.2lb. It was a very cold start to the day and water much clearer than when I fished here a couple of days ago. All the Chub were in the 3-4 ib bracket and all taken on trotted meat, including the barbel. Couldn't get anything on the feeder today. All fish caught between 1 to 3pm

Lovely beat, good access right to the river, though getting down the banks to the swims was a bit of a challenge for an oldun like me. Hope to come again when I get the opportunity.

Fished from 9 - 6pm on a beautiful wind-free autumn day. The first overnight frost of the year meant that it was still only 2 degrees when well wrapped up in the last of the mist at the start. Water now cool at 8 degrees. Fished bugs, spiders and unweighted flashback nymphs, and emergers, and all worked at different times and places during the day. Very few rises as there were very few flies - until after midday, and then just a few small olives / PWs, together with some small olives at the bottom of the beat after 4.30 p.m. The latter welcomed by the grayling as well as me! Had fish on pink shrimp, size 18 FB dark olive nymphs, Red Tag, and size 18-20 pale HE and olive Ducks Duns. Whilst the risers took the DDs, most of the ladies who came up for them were non-risers, mainly fishing foam lanes, and often in seams in pretty shallow marginal water. Grayling from 9 -14” plus one 11” OOS trout.
A great day out, on one of the best upper Wye beats, was also made so much better by the great work from the Beat owner; the significantly improved and safer access to the top half of the beat is most welcome, especially for old men with dodgy knees and aging decrepitude - thank you! Just a pity that 1m of water on the NRW gauge was pushing through a tad too much to get the best out of it.
