Beautiful day to be beside the river with your mates but fishing wise hard going with bright sunshine & low water conditions. We all enjoyed watching the fledgeling sandmartins flying out of their burrows, doing a quick circuit & scrambling back up the bank face into their nests only to pop out for more practice a few minutes later; The anxious or maybe excited parents flying overhead in great flocks twittering away. Plenty of very busy kingfishers whirring up & down as well.
The 'other' was unusual! We have all heard of wildlife being 'hooked' other than fish that is. Bats whilst casting a fly in the evening, waterbirds when using crust baits, seagulls when sea fishing & even rats whilst leaving an unattended hookbait beside a pond where there's a lot of disguarded baits. But my friend was reeling in what he thought might have been a small barbel , when 2 or 3 feet from the bank up through the water came a squirrel hooked firmly in the upper lip. He said it took some umbridge at being un hooked.
A very de-stressing day followed by a lovely evening as the sun set.
Thanks WUF as usual.

Arrived at 8am. Mist on the hills and a chill in the air. Absolutely stunning location.
Started off with French leader in Lady Alexander's catch, managed a solitary grayling from the run just below the faster water. A few rises, so switched to the dry, but no takers.
Made my way up to the top of the beat, managed to lose 2 trout that went airborne in Abernat stream section. After a break, switched to traditional wets, and fished down through Lady Alexander's again. Another 7 grayling, between 6 and 9 inches.
Fantastic day, fantastic setting. Pity I couldn't get the trout to stick.
Also saw a salmon show in the beat below the Stone Catch.

Only fished till 11.00 am due to needing to get home early. Had a Barbel on first chuck but he snagged me, must have spooked any others in the swim, but managed a couple of decent chub before packing up.

All fish caught on feeder. Barbel were 6 and 7 lbs. All chub between 3 and 6 lbs. Most caught in the morning and evening session with one chub in the afternoon.
Weather in the morning was overcast with a decent enough flow on the water - so good conditions. The sun and kayakers made 11am - 3pm tricky. The sheer volume of kayakers is quite something and along with swimmers, ruled out the island pool all day.
Had a spell trotting in the afternoon with meat and pellets. Very quiet with a few takes but no catches.
Great location. Really beautiful spot. Access was good. Great to see the salmon jumping as well. Definitely will return .
