Fishing:Trout (River)

Fished the beat from top to tail hardly anything rising all day.
So went sub-surface with weighted PT nymphs. The deeper slower water near the top of the beat proved the most productive. The trout were in perfect condition although small around 6>8 inches, grayling also.
All returned safely.

Really enjoyable late afternoon/evening fishing this beat. Tree lined along its length with good access to approx 10 swims cut down to the waters edge. Lots of cover down the nearside margin (where the flow is)with gravel beaches opposite. The fishing getting better as the light faded (as usual) each fish hooked dived for nearside rocks and roots ... great sport. Bait dropper hemp and pellets with pellet and paste on the hook. Would definitely return

It was our first trip to river wye and it was a wonderful experience. Caught only 1 barbel which is a bit of let down however had a busy day catching chub ranging between 1lb-4lb. Can't wait to visit again some other stretches of this beautiful river.

15 WBT to Nymphs with only 7 making it to hand all returned safely, they weren't having it today and only caught where there was cover in fast water. Nothing from open fast water which has been productive in the past the low clear conditions definitely made it a difficult day. Started on 4lb tippet but dropped down to 2.5lb which seamed to make difference. All fish to Euro Nymph with a team of 2 small 3mm or a 3 and a 4mm bead when the wind picked up. Lost the 2 best fish of the day to hook pulls both 2lbers, managed one that would make 1lb. Fish were rising in the flats above pools but as soon as you got within casting range they disappeared. Saw a cormorant in the water near the top of the beat which might explain why the fish were so cagey although having spoke to anglers fishing on other rivers today they had similar results so possibly down to the weather which was changeable throughout the day and felt heavy. A lovely peaceful day on a beautiful beat, tiring day due to the wading difficulty over bedrock. Also found a large rubber lure of12 cm stuck around a rock with heavy braid just above the fishing hut on the opposite bank. Will be back later in the season.

What a bizarre day on this stretch we've fished before. Water low and dropping with a tinge of brown. We struggled all morning to catch the barbel however huge chub after huge chub graced our landing nets in all swims.
Big (and small) chub succumbed to trotting tactics too which we like to do in the middle of the day to break up the tip-watching and we had one swim rocking so much so that we shared the trotting there. Then I ticked off an item from my bucket list, landing a barbel on the stick float.
Late afternoon we went roving once more, trying all swims along the stretch and picking up a couple of smallish barbel (and more big chub). Then, as dusk fell, we dropped on a group of barbel, holding station in a random place in the river, only a matter of metres away from baited areas (but we could not get a bite on those baited areas) yet cast to where the fish were and it was a bite every few minutes. Big chub and barbel again being landed. Chub to over 5lb and barbel to over 9lb. We were still getting bites as we left at curfew time.
A cracking day.
