Fished 10.30-1pm, When I got to the river it was boiling with a massive black gnat emergence. I brought a couple of solid fish to hand in short order. Then lost my go to gnat pattern when the Fulling Mill FM 50 50 hook broke as I lifted into a much better one. This is the second time this has happened this season and the hooks are now in the bin.

It then tough, as no other gnat patterns worked and the fish were locked onto them. By 11.30 the hatch was over. Took my time and picked up a couple of yellow may dun munchers in pool tails. Then had to leave for family duties.

Got back to river at 8pm and evening rise was in full swing. 2 more fish fell to a yellow may emerger and 2 to the ducks dun. I retired at 9 as the light faded and the rise petered out. Caught last fish on the what I had called as my last cast as I shot it out across the river.

All fish brought to hand where between 1lb 4oz and 2lb. Some bigger fish where moving during the gnat emergence, but I put 2 down and broke hook on another. I put the only big fish I found in the evening down as well..although it only saw the 4ft tip of an 18ft leader and a fly! There wasn’t time to wait for it to start rising again. Too many other fish were rising and time was short.

The trout werre very flighty in the low water during the day, care, stealth, slow movement and taking your time were essential and lining them or a heavy cast was terminal. As the light faded it all changed and by 8.45.you could literally walk onto them.
