1 x 11 inch Trout to dry CDC Mayfly targeted from a rise
Despite continual hatch throughout day of Olives, Browns, Mayfly etc saw three rises in a ten hour window. Fished all the deep pools with various nymphs etc to no avail. Where a brook enters the river approx half way down the beat the water Quality drops to a buff slimy bottom. Anyone else seen the Otter? dead Cray fish present
I don't think the beat holds a healthy population of fish
Very challenging best with a 6ft 2wt due to the amount of fallen trees and overhanging branches
beautiful day river very low on a beat that needs a lot of work to make it what could be great

very warm and sunny. River low and clear. Worked through beats 3. 4 and 5. so lovely to be on the water ... and such a lovely river. All made more enjoyable by the action we had.
Between us we landed and quickly returned 1 wbt (klink and dink), 4 oos chub (klink and dink), 1 dace (nymph).
Evening spent trying to connect with salmon which occasionally showed - no luck but engaging sport.

There were 2 of us, bright sunny day, got to the water about 8am. Walked the lower part of the beat and about half way down found a lamb stuck in the river not able to climb out. Lamb was removed from river and we carried on down. Started fishing in the pool at the very bottom of the beat and had three grayling between us fairly quickly on French leader. Next fish came from the bridge pool and was the only one of the day on a dry fly. Fish came fairly regularly throughout the day. Plenty of upwing flies about but not that many rising fish. Best of the day was a 15" brown from an unlikely spot just upstream of the middle weir. Lovely beat but access to water not that easy in most places due to the barbed wire fence.
Saw a goosander a couple of pools up from the bridge just before leaving in the evening.

Difficult going with very bright conditions all day. Pesky trout would not look at my dry flies & I spent a lot of time staring into my dry fly boxes trying to imagine what they might be drawn to. Whilst doing this I noticed that there was a resident spider under the soft material lining in the lid; Every time I opened the box he 'popped out' expectantly & as I hooked in another failed flea he retreated slowly behind the cover. He must be getting a rough ride today.
The 'others' were 3 Shadd that took vigorously when I changed to a small size 18 nymph. I stopped at 3 not really wanting to hook any more. Never seen one before ... very interesting design to their mouths with a notched lower jaw, some beautiful spots down their flanks & an almost tuna-like tail. They put up quite a fight on light tackle.
Thank you WUF.

Lovely day on the beat, challenging fishing all trout fell to dry flies over the day.
Beat is starting to have a neglected feel, a Few pools are unfishable Due to trees down and your up to you neck in nettles in a lot of places, just needs a little TLC to make the beat more enjoyable and easier access.

7 x trout 8-11 inches, Monnow Gosling. On a hot afternoon with the water so low, I didn't expect to do very well, but in fact a few of the larger trout (by the Lilliputian standards of this little stream) were prepared to rise to a big fly. Just the odd natural mayfly around.
