My memory must be fading – was thinking it had been too long since we had one of our red letter days on a main river beat but checking feedback it was only 2018.
We were very hopeful today – it hadn’t rained for a week and the day dawned softly with light grey cloud cover – usually a good omen. All that was needed then was for there to be some insect life and the fish to co-operate.
The previous evening the river was at 1ft 7ins on the Llanstephan gauge and it hadn’t dropped much by the time we arrived. This meant that the water was pushing through and wading was so say the least challenging – right at the limit of what we are comfortable with in fact, although it dropped to 1ft 4ins by the time we left. There was a mixed hatch in progress when we arrived and there was a golden period of a couple of hours when despite there being no rises to the hatch a dozen fish came to hand – a pretty even mix of wbt and Ladies. After that there were a few rising fish but nothing consistent – yet we managed a final tally of 22, with the best wbt a 14 incher and the best lady a solid 17 inch fish. There was a much more intense hatch of small olives as the evening approached but no real response from the fish.
We also had the pleasure of the company of the fishery owners who were glamping in their wooden caravan idyll at the river side. A real pleasure to chat and put the world to rights. Here’s hoping for tight lines for you the next day and good weather for the rest of your stay.

Had a great day on this well maintained beat, both caught some nice barbel up to around 8-9lbs with most around 7lbs. Several fish lost to hook pulls in the strong flow, good to speak to Andy the keeper. Dont quite know why we left it 3 years since our last visit but very much looking forward to returning here next trip.

Really lovely day at the Creel. Fished two new swims for me this time. Tried the fast water upstream in the morning, had a couple of nice chub but not any barbel. Too quiet, not many knocks, maybe better there early season. Moved to lower meadow in the afternoon, nice mid pace swim, bit of white water and plenty of far side cover, caught steadily for the rest of the day on feeder and balsa. Had a barbel second chuck, good sign. All chub on the float fished meat, not a single chub on the feeder. All the barbel came to feeder fished boilie and oozing pellets. Thoroughly enjoyed the day, wild life as always was amazing. Not many canoes either, the ones that came past were extremely pleasant.

Near perfect conditions although the numbers don't tell the whole story. We caught two sizeable fish, one trout and one grayling, the rest were on the smallish side. We have fished Cefnllysgwynne 5 or 6 times now and this was the best trip so far. We will be returning.
