Tricky day in very low water levels, the huge beds of streamer weed also mean that some swims are almost unfishable. Canoes were a menace as ever on the Wye, had to rescue one canoe after it capsized and drifted off without its inhabitants for which they were very grateful. Despite the tricky conditions a truly wonderful stretch of river to fish and a very enjoyable day.

River higher than Tuesday and wind made it even more difficult but beautiful day on the river. Still no trout but will try again on my next trip to Wales.

Excellent days fishing . despite arriving late ( 1pm) I was into the chub immediately from the swim in front of the hut . 4 casts produced 4 chub , probably around the 3 lb mark . i caught chub steadily for the next couple of hours with the occasional smallish barbel ( 6-7 lb ) . then there was a lull of about an hour from 1500 - 16.30 when it went completely dead , nothing , zilch , picked up again and caught more chub and barbel till i packed in at 19.30 hours. most of the chub were in the 3-4 lb range and the barbel were smallish until my last cast when i had a near double figure barbel..strangely none of the barbel were caught on meat but quite a few of the chub were . river was low and fast with floating weed being a problem. all of the barbel were caught using hinders Flatz pellets..

It’s been a while since I’ve seen the river so low. Very speculative days fishing but gave it a go anyway This was my tenth visit this season with no salmon caught or seen.Trout usually show some interest in the salmon fly here, but not today. There are a worrying number of predatory birds around now. I must have spooked eight or nine cormorants early on plus a few grey herons. And that’s in addition to the Mergansers. Serious rain needed to have a chance of saving another bleak season.
