Slightly put out as the office wouldn't let me fish the Edw because I needed to book it the day before according to the Rules. I hadn't because a lot of rain was forecast and I wasn't sure quite what effect it would have. Anyway I chose this beat at random. First thing was I couldn't work out where to park, you need to look at the map as well as read the directions. Ended up driving to the river - do not do this by accident without a 4x4 - you'll get stuck.

Nice gentle beat and just what I neede after two tiring days. 3 trout almost immediately and then nothing for hours. Picked up a grayling at the far end of the beat and rose one to the dry of my clink and dink. Missed a few lightning takes in the fast water with the indicator. 3 salmon par on the middle section. Got the car back up the hill on the second attempt. Did save me a long walk though!

WUF Note : The Edw beats are part of the Wild Stream Fishing scheme. These beats can be pre-booked but on the day can only be fished if you are a Wild Stream Permit holder. Wild Stream Permit holders have paid for the 'right to roam' on these beats providing they haven't been pre-booked.

Day 2 of middle hill court, river conditions were virtually the same as yesterday just a slight drop in river level. Managed 3 barbel, two from the top end and one lower down. All fish came to pellet.

The pegs need some maintenance as they are overgrown with nettles. The access to some pegs are inaccessible and need carved out. Still a very pleasant stretch to fish though, will be back next year.

Nice day on the stretch, couldn't find the gravel close in to the edge as per the description but managed 9 barbell between us, including one on the float a first for us. Also a few very very small ones which looks good for the future. Nothing of any size.

Beat:Wyastone Leys

Fishing:Coarse

No. of Anglers:2

WYASTONE LEAS is one of our favourite beats on the wye and has never let us down. This is despite the fly tipping that still occurs where we park and more annoyingly the total lack of work done in swim preparation. It took us a good hour to clear two swims and this is not the first time we have done this. It is little wonder this beat is rarely fished if this is the attitude taken by the wye & usk. We had 10 barbel to 9lb. 07oz. PB & DD WEST SUSSEX.

WUF Note : Not all beats have resident fishery keepers who will carry out regular maintain and bankside vegetation grows rapidly at this time of year, hindering access on many beats where there are few bookings. We do carry out maintainance work, usually ahead of the opening day but with limited resources and depending on bookings, we will concentrate efforts on certain beats. There are many beats that have regular maintenance carried out and we can advise on these if required. It is important howver to remember that on the whole, the Wye is wild fishing and anglers will be expected on certain stretches to create their own swims.

Beat:Chainbridge

Fishing:Salmon

Fished beautiful Chainbridge for Salmon from Monday 14th to Sunday 20th August 2017 using fly only. Fished short sessions early morning and evenings. On arrival the river was clear and normal summer level. No takes Monday and Tuesday, hooked a Grisle between 4 and 6lb on Wednesday, played the fish in but unfortunately hook hold gave as I released my landing net.

Thursday the river rose about 18 inches and was carrying a fair bit of colour. Friday to Sunday no takes but more fish moving, particularly on the Sunday. I really enjoyed my time fishing here in beautiful surroundings although I didn't catch, which was probably due to inexperience on my part.

Had a good day at Gromain today, albeit no fish caught. The river is on the low side but saw two fish rise in the middle of the Spring Pool. I picked up and destroyed a length of discarded nylon at the Heirag pool.
More water please

So tried again, on my own, some of the techniques I'd learnt yesterday and not very successfully initially. Switched to clink and dink but the fishing gods were having none of it. Then tried some indicator nymph fishing and took a frisky brown.
Fished the fast water at the top of the beat using the indicator method in the late afternoon. Picked up 4 salmon parr and a nice grayling. Hard work and hard wading. Missed loads of takes. Water depth varies so much with rocky bottom, getting snagged was a regular event, but the fish were there. Managed not to fall over which was a feat in itself. Much more exhausting than my usual fishing. However previously I wouldn't have attempted wading that sort of water. I guess I just need more practice.
