Fishing:Trout (River)

After a fantastic day at Ashford House we had high expectations that the following day would be similar. Penpont is great, varied water and the MB started hatching as expected at 11:30. However, few fish rose for them. The day was warm and sunny, but with a chilly northerly wind. We had 11 between the 2 of us on dries mainly fished blind. Smallest about 1/2lb and larges close to 2lb. After the hatch finished we nymphed for hours but no takes. Strange day, but I have to say Penpont is a gorgeous place to fish.

Fished Talybont reservoir 10.00am to 1.30pm with LT. Buzzers hatching but very little fish activity. Way too calm and bright! Managed 3 each; nothing huge but typical healthy Talybont fish. Lost one on a long range release that looked a better fish.

Beat:Abergavenny Town Water

Fishing:Trout (River)

Fished bottom end of Abergavenny town with a MTAA member from 2.30pm till 4.00pm. Lots of grannom on the wing when we arrived, but barely a rise to be seen. We had half a dozen between us, most on nymphs fished under a klinkhammer, but the best fish nailed the klink. I lost a good fish on a streamer. The top of the beat resembled Barry Island beach - complete with sunbathers & swimmers! Maybe not the best beat for a sunny warm day.

Nice to be back on a favourite beat and good to see that someone has been very busy improving the access in and out of the water. With a little less water, (0.65 at Ross gauge), it would have been possible to wade the right bank from the bridge all the way to the pipe some 200mtrs downstream. And then get out easily at the new steps, yahoo!
As it was the fly failed and the spinning rod captured the obligatory trout, although of good sizes at 2lb+, and chub. No salmon this time but not to worry as it’s not all about catching fish. Is it?

A day booked to combine trout fishing with some salmon casting practice and rod and line matching in preparation for a Scottish trip. Unfortunately the only bit of trout activity happened while swinging salmon rods!

Living the dream again , last day of a mooch around the wild streams for a bit anyway , well about a week or so !!!!!!!! So gave the Lugg at Litton a crack today , checked Byton gauge before hand , not looking toooooooo bad at 0.57 m could have done with a bit less , but we'd never go fishing if rivers these days were as up and down as they are !!!!!!

Tackled up usual outfit , had a chat with the lady from Lower Litton Farm house , and took a bimble down the valley to the start of the beat . . . . Water looking great , running a bit heigh but clear as gin , so opted for tungsten olive nymph and GRHE nymph , give them a go . . . .

Was quite some time before I had a good take , usual savage hit by the Lugg brownies , lovely colours , as always , about eight inches , slipped back in , spot on , first Lugg brownie of the season , happy days !!!

Second fish was half hour later , another deep pool , snatched at the fly , could see him turn on it in the deep clear water , again feisty fish , about ten inches , admired and slipped back in , no more takers over the four hours , saw a cheeky stoat rummaging along a hedge row , pickings looked a bit slim ,and a fat rabbit would have sorted him out for a few days !!!

Anyway , not much insect wise going on down in the Lugg valley , a few grannom seen and saw a dozen LDO's perhaps the main party will be this afternoon , had an enjoyable four hours , from nine till one , perhaps later would have been more beneficial , still a couple of fit Lugg brownies to the net was spot on , be back when these teddy bears start taking off the top !!!!!!
