Hot and sunny, a lot of mayfly and olives coming off. Hard work during the day but plenty of rises in the evening but just couldn’t get them to take!

Beat:Honddu Lower Stanton

Fishing:Trout (River)

Lower Stanton Farm was hosting a charity duck race which put the middle stretch of the beat out of action! Good weather and saw lots of fly on top and bottom ends but no rising fish. Caught one near top end on dry fly cast into fast run by roots.

Hot and sunny, and river low. Fished dries/emergers all day as fish were attracted even when nothing rising. Missed a lot of takes. No monsters caught, but 3 were 15-16". One or two very big fish moving in almost dried up tail of Sewage pool. Very nice beat.

We arrived at the beat around mid day with ideal weather, sunny intervals and light winds. Starting at the bottom of the beat below the confluence with the Monnow there was a reasonable amount of fly life with some olives hatching and an intermittent but steady hatch of Mayfly. Things looked promising but although a few fish were rising there seemed to be less activity than we remembered when we last fished this beat about 3 years ago.

We slowly worked our way up the beat fishing the whole of the Olchon up to the top limit, at which point the catch for two rods was 7 trout, all to Mayfly, with probably double that number missed or lost after a brief struggle. A very enjoyable session, but given the conditions we would perhaps have expected more fish. After dinner, my fishing partner John went out again to fish the evening rise and added a further two fish so the final tally for two rods was 9 wild brown trout between 6 and 12 inches.

Only spent 3 hours today on the beat and had 3 Grayling and a Brown Trout to hand. Started with a gold bead red necked ptn without success so switched to a green flash back ptn and what a difference. Second cast and I was into the first Grayling and so it proves it’s always worth experimenting.
