River falling slowly after flood the day before, cold wind, sunny in afternoon. Caught and returned two on dries during very short hatch at around 2pm, one on a nymph deep earlier in day.

Weather would be best described as austere, with a cold east wind. Thankfully the river had fined down from the previous day's torrent. A few march browns and LDOs hatching in the quieter water, cheered the soul and reminded me that spring is on its way, after all. Twelve brown trout to 15" all safely returned: most, but not all, on nymph.

3 trout caught on worm . Neighbour that I gave them to, says she weighed the 3 together and they weighed 5 lb. The action was short lived and there was nothing for the following few hours. Obviously the stock fish are shoaling and Llwyn On is a big pond. Looking forward to it warming up so that I can get up to the Usk Reservoir.

More of a walk with a rod than a fishing session as the river was pretty high and fishable in only a couple of places, although dropping failry quickly. Plenty of LDOs caught in foam but nothing rising. There is a very tricky gate on the left bank as you go from fields to coniferous wood. The combination of unstable, tilted date and barbed wire meant I wimped out at that point. Couldn't open the gate or safely (for waders) climb over. Otherwise a very pretty beat with some very good habitat.

Cold day with snow and hail. The stream was in good nick though, nice and clear where the main river was in spate. Fished with a 9 ft rod which was okay but probably won't be once the vegetation blooms. Klink and dink with the Klink on a sliding dropper so I could vary the nymph depth. Fished the pools thoroughly but no takers today

9 x trout 6-8 inches, size 14 Goldbead Hare's Ear nymph. A slow start today, probably due to a very cold night. Fish were lying doggo on the bottom of pools and no sign of fly life yet. Reached the top at midday in a short shower of snow.

10 x trout 6-8 inches, Gold Bead Hare's Ear nymph. By choice I would have been out on the Usk today, but due to rain and high water it was not to be. It's a little early for the brooks, but the Forest of Dean streams were unaffected by the rain and looked in nice condition. And as they are not so far above sea level, it's not a bad place to start. The fish were still deep in the pools this morning, but despite a rising gale a few olives came off as I walked back to the start and I'm guessing that trout will be rising before long.
