Fishing:Trout (Stillwater)

More a day for meteorologists rather than fishers. Snow drifts blocked the track in (will now be melted), 9C warm and humid, 3 types of insects hatched, rumbles of thunder, lake cold and level high. Then it got windy and cold, but Bugeilyn always delivers and 2 trout in good condition caught with a size 12 Butcher, near the bottom. Many comments on the state of the track, but a walk in is always pleasant, with fine views and lots of wildlife to observe. Takes no more than 30-40 minutes.

For those of you who like a wild stream the Taf Fechan is well worth a visit at this time of year. If you can make the visit to coincide with the Pontsticill Reservoir just over flowing so much the better. The wild Tout take readily in these conditions and small flies Nymphs fished downstream can be very productive.

After a week of positive catch returns on Dinas, and Brecon gauge at 1' 6", I decided to give it a go. I fished a march brown nymph & hares ear gold head duo on a 10' 3WT in the fast runs and pocket water for 4 1/2 hours. I can't even say I had a couple of knocks, there was nothing moving at all. With a light wind and some bright sun, there was a slow hatch during the day which had a 30 minute hot spot around 2pm with many insects on the surface. Still no fish!

Unseasonably cold conditions. I knew the feeding window would be short so fished from 12-2pm. Hooked and lost two fish to GRHE. Nice to be out! And the river was lovely

Just a morning session nymphing. River still a little high and brisk making wading a bit of a challenge and no sign of any fish at all. The very busy otter probably had better luck than I!
