Beat:Pinsley Brook

Fished two beats of the Pinsley Brook , prospecting nymphs , of various varieties , scoring mainly with the gold head hares ear , and from mainly tales of the pools . Water is still high on the Pinsley and Cheaton Brook , although perhaps another day or two and it would be getting there !!!!
Lots of activity about half two three is , some LDO s on the move , and with the slightly higher temperatures of late , was nice to see bumble bee queens busying on the banks , looking for a likely disused mouse hole or natural hollow to start the colony . . . . .
Feisty little fish today , nothing nudging over eight inches , but with the warmer weather should be some fun sport ahead lots of canopy and casting all other none conventional techniques to work the nymphs in the likely spots . . . . Six in total , in two very tricky beats on the Pinsley and Cheaton , great fun will head down again very soon .
Maybe next week will tackle the Clettwr and have a good workout down in the gorge !!!!!

River high but clear. Strong wind and sunshine prevented any sustained hatch though occasional fish could be found rising in more sheltered spots and 4 nice fish of 17"15"13"11" were caught on Copper John (x 1) and Comparadun (x3)

The water was pushing through at a fast pace (we had noted it at just over 1' on the Brecon Gauge that morning), and a high wind was always going to present a challenge. Access to the water is very limited - we managed to fish the downstream limit for about 25-30 yds, but then found a combination of high, sheer banks and dense undergrowth further upstream prevented us getting into the water. Very low water would make much larger stretches of this beat 'fishable'' allowing you to get into the River and wade safely up or downstream - there are some very deep stretches on this beat ! Establishing the upper and lower limits of the Beat is tricky - the Farmer we met on the bank was helpful and able to put us right, but perhaps beat markers would help make things much clearer.
Worth noting there is a lot of loose wire up and down the banks, so a little caution needed.
Tough day, and sadly no fish seen or caught.

The river was clear but up and pushing, and there was a pretty vicious chilly wind. There was a very sparse hatch of LDOs which never got going and a good but short-lived March Brown hatch. Some trout came up for the March Browns and we managed to get a couple of fish each with one or two takes missed. Best fish of the day was about 1.5lbs, the others all around a pound.

First ever visit to the Taff, parked at Aberglais Inn. Road down to the river crosses a lovely vertical sided canyon with impressive waterfalls, especially with the river running high. Downstream is a fast rocky river, but with a cold upstream wind there were few olives coming off. No fish rising and despite using dries and nymphs did not get any takers. However, most of the local dog walkers also seemed to be fishers, and were very happy to chat and I picked up many tips for the future. So, a blank but will definitely return when it's a bit warmer and the river less speedy!
