Well with the impending thundery weather , headed down early to the Pinsley Brook , again covering the WUF beat and a private stretch . . . .
Initially , thinking the trout from yesterday's bonanza would be still keen on a large mayfly pattern , and they were , except that the smaller more inexperienced fish were nailing them , like a great white shark hitting a seal !!!!!! More often than not no contact was made , great fun though . I'm sure they will hone their skills over the next two weeks to a fine art . . . . . .

I decided having taken two little six inch scrapers to down size thing s, and opted for a grey wulff in size fourteen , seemed to do the trick , hammering it still and staying on !!! As is the case , was a bit early at nine for any significant mayfly activity. And they only started putting in an appearance about elevenish . . .

The sport was again fun , but really had to work for spotting rises and getting into a position to try and alight a dry in to the right place . . . . Easier said than done here !!!! It's a mini Belize in Herefordshire , and some mega accurate casting is needed to avoid the elusive tree trout , which got me a couple of times .

Was a fun three hours , five gorgeous little brownies released , wiser and hoping they'll get a little bigger , will give Pinsley another crack next week , great fun , happy days . . . . . . .

A tough but rewarding afternoon on the Eyton beat. More than half the fish were 3/4-1lb, stuffed bellies and plenty of Mayfly about as well as plenty of caddis and different olives, the top end of the beat is very overgrown, not unfishable but well in need of a little pruning with a chainsaw!!
Another great day out, thanks to the W and U, and the beat owners.

Evening ticket Met the same poacher as last week. Same time same spot. Reported him to the NRW for what it’s worth. This time he had two light coloured dogs with him. Whippet / lurchers. He obviously likes the beat. Must be local.

Having other commitments in the afternoon, I was only able to fish 0800-1030, so had to push through quite quickly. This is a very tricky beat requiring some tight casting, my 6'6" rod still felt too long in places. I left a lot of pools unfished, particularly the upper half which is particularly enclosed by vegetation, but think I could have covered more with more time available.
Those that I did fish were full of trout, with almost every section where I could lay a fly resulting in a splashy rise or pull on the nymph. 6 stuck long enough to come to hand, biggest about 7" and the rest about 4"-5"

River up and slightly coloured and mixed weather throughout the day, eventually driving me off the water with heavy rain early evening. Mayfly were about in small numbers, but floating down unmolested by the trout. I also spotted coch-y-bonndu beetles, plenty of olive duns and spinners and the odd yellow may dun. Nymphs produced no response and little was rising and it was only when I changed from a size 14 Adams to a size 18 olive that larger fish hit the fly with some confidence. Lack of river fishing so far this year meant three promising fish only stayed on the hook briefly. Best fish at 11 inches. This is my second visit to a really beautiful beat with its own secluded magic, favourite place on the Arrow so far.
