Spent a few hours basically just exploring a new beat (for me). The issue of the day was whether the river was (a) completely unfishable - being at 2 ft in height and about 1 ft visibility - or (b) just marginally fishable, a conceptual point which left me with about one percent hope as I dredged a fast-sink line through some shallower (I assume) runs. The issue was, however, resolved by an angler from a neighbouring beat who told me he had had a good pull, so it was option (b) after all. No fish actually seen, but they are evidently there.

Tough day, river high but clear. Wading tricky. Both fish taken on PTN. Brief hatch and rise around 3pm. Cool later and killed off the day.

Caught five trout between us, the biggest a real whopper for Dom. We forgot our scales but it was 21.25" long - in stunning condition too, estimate it would have weighed about 3lb 8oz. All caught on nymphs. There were sporadic, small hatches of mayfly and caddis, plus a few big stoneflies on the banks, mostly late morning and early afternoon and that was when the fishing was best. Only one or two rises all day though - definitely a day for the nymph. Other fish ranged from 1/2lb to 1lb. Lost a few others too trying to get them across to net in the fast water. Challenging but rewarding fishing. We haven't fished here for a few years, and I've fished very little in the last three due to fatherhood so it was great to get out again (despite a bad leak in my waders due to my little daughter's pet rabbit XD), we shared a rod for much of the day. The beat was absolutely stunning, lots of wood anemone and celandine out on the banks and a dipper flitting up and down the banks - wonderful just being there during the slow spells. Thanks for a lovely day out which will live long in our memories - will email you a few photos of the big one!

fished the upper section in Worm's Wood. Interesting section of river if a bit overgrown. Four small, out-of-season grayling. All caught deep on green shrimps and beaded, green squirmy nymphs. No sign of trout.

No fish seen or touched as we fished the beat from top to bottom. Felt that to a fall of 8" or so would help the fly fishing considerably but water clarity and colour was good.
