For The second day on this beat my 13yr old
Son who is fishing mad, fished the wye for the first time, still a lot of weed coming down prevented us from keeping a bait in the water for enough time for a bite!! So a Change of plan was needed, fortunately we had invested in some waders, otherwise I’m sure we wouldn’t have caught, it enabled us to get to some bushes wear we could trott some bread flake and I managed to winkle out 3 chub biggest 3lb 15oz and my lad lost 2 chub! Not a beat I would return to I’m afraid, not many accessible swims at the top
end either. On a plus for you salmon and trout fisherman, plenty of salmon and trout jumping, roll on Thomas Wood tomorrow

A superb day trotting for dace and chub in low water. The dace fishing in particular was spectacular, with 40+ fish to around 11 ounces taken on hemp and sweetcorn. The lighter tackle was no match for a couple of barbel hooked in the middle of the day.

18 Chub, 40 Other

As on Saturday on Dean and Chapter I opted to fish for Chub again with Bread and Corn. There is a good head of Chub on this beat and the wood holds more than most.In total I had 17 and lost 3 more, all were between 3 and a little over 4lb and in good condition.15 were caught on floating Bread in the shallow water and it was brilliant sport,if you have never fished like this you should give it a try, there is more to the Wye than waiting for a Barbel to pull your rod in.A Chub in shallow weedy water with give you a battle to make your heart race a bit!.The other 2 fish were caught on corn in deeper water,a very enjoyable days fishing.

Day two on this fabulous beat. Tried fishing duo in the morning with no joy and know sign of any feeding fish. Weather improved and the sun hit the water giving sporadic hatches and some life to the proceedings . Took four trout on very small elk hair caddis with a long light leader in faster waters. Good access to the whole beat. Wading staff essential on this stretch it's very slippery.

I arrived at 8 o'clock after 2 days of heavy rain ,which followed and marked the end of the heatwave of 2018 as it will be known. It would have been later if I had got a coffee from the place we passed on the road, but Red said she did not think it looked an establishment that cleaned their equipment,Red is usually right about these things. The river was fresh and clean unlike its lowland cousins unwashed appearance would have been. I walked the lower beat, the little 6 foot 3 weight would work well with trees and willows caressing the surface. No trout were moving despite armadas of water boatmen and some having mass regattas at every bend. I failed to catch anything except trees, and returned at 4 pm to repeat the same but included a swim when the bank under the electric fence, which on advice I so carefully limbo d,vanished beneath me, I eventually hauled myself out clutching the actual nettle ,the dry scorched grass coming away in my grasp ,Red said she expected I squealed like a baby, she is usually right about these things .This is a great beat as lots of variety, mill pond, riffles and slow deep sections ,I learned a lot, mostly that a really really long wading stick is a good thing and that, chest waders and life saver are highly recommended .So,no fish, despite using all my dry fly's and nymphs, but a privilege to be on this beat.
