Beat:Middle Hill Court

Fishing:Coarse

No. of Anglers:2

Other species caught were dace and bleak. River was slightly up and a good colour. Methods used were stick floats and feeders. The number of swims available for coarse anglers is very limited and the access to some if not all is precarious to say the least. We feel strongly that to ensure the safety of anglers some improvements to swims and access need to be made.

WUF Note : The Wye is wild fishing, much of which in the Passport is left in a mostly natural state. Also, the banks are SSSI and there are therefore limits legally on what can be done. Some fisheries have better access than others so if you plan a return visit and need advice on venues which have regular maintenance and less challenging access, then please call us. We are always happy to suggest places to suit specific requirements.

Our first visit to Courtfield in what seemed perfect conditions, a falling river with plenty of cloud cover in the evening. Considering the conditions, we were a little disappointed with our tally of one Barbel and 3 Chub. Very pleasant stretch and even when the fishing disappoints the River Wye never lets you down. kingfishers, buzzards, dragonflys, swans and a leaping salmon.

A fantastic red letter day. Drove up from London at ridiculous o'clock to be fishing by 8.30am. Simon Evans and Rod turned up at hour or so later. Had the first fish (13lb cock with a huge Kype) around 10am in the tail of rock. Shouted down to Simon who came up from bridge to net it. The second (an 11lb hen) came from just above the rock. The third ( 10lb hen) from the jet just below the rock. Simon will dine out on the 3rd. He told me I was overcasting and the next cast produced an immediate take. Mid afternoon, standing in the tail of rock and wishing I was a foot taller as the water sloshed over my waders I turned to pick my way back to the bank with the line trailing behind me and it ripped off. 10 seconds later I demonstrated perfect long range catch and release. Chris Ryan (Sportfish) turned up with a flask of coffee and his kids. Always a pleasure to see them all. The sun went down and I drove the 188 miles back to London. A fantastic day ! Finally, thanks to Guy Mawle for his support of the Wye Usk auction and to Ken Evans for the Willie Gunn Piglet that gave me 2 other salmon (15lb and 11lb) on Friday 6th from the Usk.

River 1ft 10" dropping 2 " during the day. Near perfect conditions and the beat looked magnificent with the trees turning and Hay bluff looming over the Glangwy. Rod I was fishing with missed one in bridge first up and then after some phone calls I started in gravel catch. Less than 10 casts later a coloured 10-11lb cock took a #8 bann twitched back through the slow water at the top. Several others showed while fishing the pool. Broke for lunch and after went hunting ceps; successfully. Spent rest of the afternoon/evening helping others catch fish, successfully in one case, unsucessfully in the other.
