River still pretty high, running fast but clear, so excellent conditions for a great day, and it was as expected. Grayling were really active, I stopped counting after a while but number is certainly higher than 30. All fishes were taken on a grey parachute, size 14/16. I tried to fish with heavy nymphs at the pool at the very top of the beat, and once again I hooked something pretty big, which has easily broken my 6 lb line. Great beat, I will definitely come back.

First time on this beat and impressed with access and the number of swims available. The river was up 2 foot or so from the night before so had a fair bit of pace and colour to it. Both anglers had a Barbel first cast, and we caught consistently throughout the day with the best being around 9lb or so. There were a couple of anglers on the far bank but nothing which caused us any disturbance. The river this time of year is spectacular, as is the fishing. Will return to this beat again.

Last day of the trout season for me on the Beacons Reservoir, an old favourite stamping ground of mine. Beacons makes a great alternative to Tal-Y-Bont, much easier access for those who do not like driving through the narrow country lanes. Fished from 2.30pm till 6.00pm. An overcast, dark afternoon with a strong but warm southerly wind. Perfect conditions! 7 nice trout came to the net, including a cracking 17 incher, plus 3 x 14 inch and 3 x 11/12 inch fish. Good sport in the shallow areas of the lake on floating line, intermediate polyleader.

Beat:The Rectory Fishery

Fishing:Salmon

Another great day on the Rectory. Fished solidly from 8.30am to 6.30pm. Water level at 1 foot 11" and barely dropped. Clarity perfect. Covered all the main pools but no pulls whatsoever. Then hit a pod of fish and had three takes in 5 casts, landing 12lb cock, and 10lb hen, and dropping another fish at the net. Chris Ryan, who had morphed from fishing mate catching trout to my ghillie for the day, apologised profusely for "operator error" but to be honest it was my own foul-up. I used one of Ken Evan's gold bodied Willie Gunn piglet on a floating line with an 8 foot slow sink poly leader. We carried on fishing and both had a couple of tentative pulls which didn't develop into proper takes and that was it. 20 minutes of frenetic activity and it was all over. But what a 20 minutes !

Beat:Gromain & Upper Llanstephan

Fishing:Salmon

Having abandoned Ty Newydd on Saturday as too high to fish, Gromain looked high but optimistically 'fishy'. No takers until late on when Karen hooked a fish in Ferry about 40yds below the gauge near the planks only for it to come off a few seconds later. I then enjoyed the same experience, hooking a fish in the tail of Ferry, playing it briefly. At least we'd enjoyed the thrill of a take!

Quite a tricky days fishing with just one barbel of 6Ib 10oz to show for our efforts. The river was quite high and we feel would have fished better in lower river level conditions. A nice stretch of river in pleasant surroundings.
