Tried every bait under the sun, worms, boilies, pellet, corn, bread, cheese, paste... Just wasn't happening. Limited flow. Turned to trotting a stick float and took a couple of 8oz chub on hookable pellet . Weedy and generally very difficult.

Parked at fishing hut and started fishing directly in front of hut and most fish taken at this area. Nice brown and grayling taken alongside single rock mid river on size 20 ptn. One really good brown lost around rocks just downstream. Relatively easy wading around this area and lots of small browns that would rise to dry fly - mainly emerger and para adams. Only fished for about 2 1/2 hours.

Fishing as good as yesterday at Lower Backney but from the bank for a change. Caught steadily through out the day with the majority of fish coming from the fast water downstream.
No Anglers present on the far bank to start with, just one short on !Q who kept asking us when we were packing up!
Regular switching of rigs from short to long & vice versa as the day went on brought more fish to the bank. They seemed to back off at times too. The fish came out of the fast water towards the evening & settled in the sluggish swims closer to the access path.
Groundbait feeder & hemp won the day with pellet on the hook. Rolling meat towards nightfall.
Best Barbel was just shy of 9lb, Chub - 4-12.

Water super low - if I'd checked the levels online before coming I might have thought twice about it, but was delighted with five fish; with barely 6inch of water in some places and a great deal of overhanging foliage this was seriously tricky, but in the few remaining deeper pools and sections where it opens out enough to allow more of a cast there was every chance of a fish. There are certainly a lot of them in there - I was scattering them at every step! Also caught a small roach.

Having fished Bideford in a couple of hours, I thought I could have a go at Cannop and still be home by lunchtime and I was right - with the water at this level, much of the beat isn't really likely to produce fish, at least not without angling ability beyond mine. That said, Cannop is a little more open than Bideford generally and there were sections where a cast was possible and some deeper channels, and fish resulted. I was more fortunate than previous rods in that I met only one family with a dog and they both kept the dog away from the water and instructed their small child not to throw things into it (although a stretch above them was obviously coloured up, I assume because the dog had indeed had a dip). Even more remarkably I managed two trout in one cast - fishing duo, lifted when I saw the dry being taken and found one attached to the nymph as well. A first for me. The weir had barely a trickle of water coming over it and the pool beneath only produced a healthy looking roach.
