Nice sunny day on the river. Trout up to 9" but nothing rising. Hooked and lost some bigger trout in the deep pools.

First trip out this season - Usk looking beautiful and Penpont as lovely a setting as always. River was clear - trickle of large olives (but not very dark!) and brook duns until the middle of the afternoon when we had a rain squall which dropped the temperature several degrees and put things back to winter mode.
Fish spooky in the bright conditions - fished dries all day as is our wont, managed two wbt of 9 and 13 inches on para ginger quills, two other better fish were lost, 1 to long distance C&R and another big fish which smashed the tippet at the first lunge.
Thanks to Chris in the office for helping with booking - we left it until the morning as rain was forecast the previous night - but it didn't materialise!
The spookiness of the fish was probably exacerbated by their being fished the previous two days. I wonder if there is any way the web bookings could be amended so it is possible to see recent bookings? Would help with making an informed choice when selecting a beat - catch returns often don't appear for a couple of days afterwards (case in point! Sorry)

Blank day with absolutely nothing seen all day. No rises, no pulls not even a scared fish fleeing! Lovely stretch of river but where are the stocks of small fish I've seen here in previous years? Did see a Goosander with 9-10 chicks (but not laying the blame there). Low water with cool downstream wind.

River was at a good level, warm sunshine but breezy at times which made upstream dry fly casting difficult. All Grayling took an iron Blue klinkhammer pattern. No trout caught.

Level just under 18” on the site, however the river was running reasonably clear. Nothing hatching off so consequently nothing rising. All fish taken on various different nymphs along the beat. Both trout at 8” and the grayling 6”.
Wind picked up at 2 o’clock ish so I packed up and went home happy and content.
