Lovely beat with very varied water and good access but wading as described. The ancient oaks lining the bank by the old fishing hut are majestic. As for previous entry rising fish on the lower stretch on arrival at 11am. Masses of small gnats and up wings of various sizes as the day went on. Fish taken steadily on various nymphs and a few splashy rises to parachute adams. Tricky wading to get into position to cover feeding fish and pocket water but managed to avoid a dunking! Later changed to dry fly to try and discover why the rolling risers were taking.
Small black klinkhammer was most consistent. Missed quite a few. 10 trout at 8 to 14inches. Really satisfying day in warm sunshine.

Water a good height for us now with a little to much colour. No offers this morning but plenty of fish travelling through. Should be spot on by the weekend.

The weekend forecast said it would rain all day today and I thought, forecasts are always wrong... but it was spot on. Oddly, the river appeared to drop slightly while I was there, so at a height of a foot or above summer level and not too much colour it looked very promising. I've never seen so many house martins, swallows, sand martins and even a couple of swifts banqueting on the feast of upwing flies coming off, as well as pied and grey wagtails and a spotted flycatcher, but no sign of trout, except for four small ones taken on the salmon rod. No sign of salmon either, and as the rain kept getting heavier I opted for the early bath. Substantial earthworks and landscaping are under way on the overgrown bank below the ruined cottage so I guess someone is going to build - I hope it will improve the access to the top of the beat.

A few fish rising when we started mid morning, despite persistent rain. Over the afternoon the rain got lighter and the mayfly hatch got heavier, resulting in some excellent fishing. Largest trout almost 1 1/2lbs, also had one grayling and one dace (all returned). Abundant wildlife including kingfisher, dippers, goosanders, spotted flycatchers and 2 massive oil beetles.

River high and fast and the water very brown. 3/4 lb on May Fly in morning close to the bank and 1/2 lb on Black Peacock late afternoon. Lots of surface rises from 4pm - lots of fly changes but couldn't work out what they were taking

I booked today as the weather forecast suggested Wednesday might be the best day, weather-wise. It wasn't! It rained all day. However the water was at a much better height than it has been for weeks, so worth a cast. It was a bit coloured but this cleared a little throughout the day.

I hooked 8 fish, all of which got off! One was a SALMON, which porpoised and stuck two fins up at me..... b*****d!!

Caught it just right with the river fining down and the level dropping after a few rainy days. Fish fed avidly on the surface from early afternoon onwards. Variety of upwings hatching throughout the day. 8 browns in total, mostly between half a pound and a pound. Best fish about one and a half pounds, all in immaculate condition. Lost roughly the same number of fish to early self releases (barbless hooks), and missed plenty of rises too. First two fish to beaded nymph, all to deer hair emerger thereafter. First visit to the Usk and a day to remember. Will definitely be back.
Stayed at Caravan Club site in Brecon, 5 minutes drive away.
