A belting day, with sunshine and a gentle breeze throughout - a real pleasure to be on such a scenic beat in those conditions, with the river dropping to an ideal height. One rod was targeting salmon all day with the fly, the others switched between fly / spin to suit the different pools.
Saw several salmon moving above the bridge in the morning but none were contacted.
Two of us then switched to fishing a duo on 4/ 5wt. set-ups as the fish rising to the immense hatches proved too much to resist! We had grayling to 2lbs and trout to 12oz, mostly on the dry but a few to weighted nymphs. We lost count of the number of takes missed. Saw a cracking barbel beneath the bridge, head down, tail up, 8lbs +
We will return!

Blistering sunshine on the river all day, no sign of a hatch and no fish seen, hottest April since '49 ? Neither of the 2 rods were around then but I believe them ! Several hours in these conditions made for thirsty work, suitably refreshed at the Red Lion Llangynidr. Nil return

An early start provided three trout, biggest circa 2.5lb. Understandably, they didn't make too much of an impression on the salmon rod. Good to see the river fly life in such abundance - there appears to be more on the Wye than on the Hampshire chalk springs.... no surprise there in all reality, these days.
Having fishes through Maddox and down through Vanstone, I thought it would be a good idea, circa 09.00Hrs, to try the other bank for Windmill, given water heights. How foolish can one be???? Viewing from the left bank I saw a plethora of canoeist's on the shingle bank (right hand) of Windmill. Dog jumping in the water, a fool lobbing lumps of consolidated mud into the pool (not sure what he was trying to prove) and a jester (probably from Price Charles entourage) showing off just how many times they bounce a stone across it. Well that's that, no point in going over there.... So, after a quick smoke I thought I'd take a walk up to the top of the beat - to see what was accessible, given water height. Eventually, I managed to get into the 'V', whereupon half the British Canoe Union appeared. I sat there and smiled - after all they do have the right to be there..... then one of them capsized. What an idiot. Time for another smoke. Then another canoe came along, this time with Noddy and his friend. In an inflateable canoe. Noddy was spinning. 'Alright mate?' he said. I just got out and disappeared.
I know we all have bad days.... but when I've traveled from Hampshire, paid £58.00, not to mention the money spent of a rod licence, one really does have to ask if it's worth the hassle.
WUF note: Please immediately report anyone poaching (such as spinning in an inflatable canoe) to the Environment Agency hotline: 0800 80 70 60

river level perfect but very bright conditions. Lovely trout about 1.5 pound taken on a heavy nymph other fish in the 0.75 lb range. all fish returned. Had we been able to fish the start and end of the day I am sure we would have taken more fish, but there's always another day.

Disappointing if beautiful day, water possibly still a bit high and coloured resulting in a lot of scrambling in and out of the river, steady hatch of small upwing flies and the occasional monster stone fly made me think that it could all come alive at any moment, but it didn't.
