8 x grayling 12-16 inches, 3 x out of season trout 9-10 inches, long trotting. The weather forecast let us down badly here. Two dry and cold weekend days should have been enough for the level of the Irfon to drop to a good fishing level. What we got was rain, snow on the hills, and so the river level stayed stubbornly up at 0.85 metres on the Cilmery gauge, which I would normally define as a flood. However, the water colour was not too thick. It was just about possible to fish under the bank and trot a couple of holes where the current was not too fast and grayling were sheltering. I would think that with a fly rod it would have been nigh on impossible, although two very nice gentlemen from Cheltenham were trying.

"O" from Gloucestershire says it all ! The predicted forecast did not help when we booked and it was really a 'wash out' for us two from Cheltenham with our flies. Charlie was very friendly when we arrived and likewise 'O', who cheered us up by confirming that conditions were not in our favour! His advice on location gave us some hope and we battled on to dusk, catching one small and one 10" grayling (downstream from the chapel). Lovely beat and we very much enjoyed the day.

River still up after recent downpours and fast flowing. Nice stretch of water will definitely try again.

Our timing was not the best as the beat was flooded! The water was really high and badly coloured. (Checked the Lugg gage and thought it was alright. Apparently it was the misjudgement on our part.) However, having driven for 2hrs from Bristol, we decided to fish it anyway. The flow was really strong. A 4mm tungsten bead did not reach the bottom. At the end, we had to either bunch the heavy bugs very close together or to add split shots to the cast. My mate had two on squirmy worm and black heavy bug. I only had one on UV ping tag but it was a giant; measuring 15inch and my new PB. Not expect this on a tough condition. So a happy day!

River running fairly high but clear occasional rain / sleet showers. All fish were caught on nymphs. A few olives seen on the water but no fish rising.

Very disappointed as the map of the beat that showed a footpath down the entire length of the beat did not represent reality at all, it was a heavily wooded beat for 100%, and with the river as high as it was we tried to access the river from both parking spots, gave up and went fishing at Builth Town for a tenner !!!

This beat description needs to highlight that it runs through woodland and the only way to access this beat is by wading when the river is 1metre or lower

WUF note: Thank you for the feedback, we will look into the access at Doldowlod and review the maps where necessary.
