Choosing to fish on the day ex-hurricane Ophelia blew wasn't the best idea but nonetheless we had a great day on this lovely stretch of water. A stiff downstream breeze did make it difficult but we fished until mid-afternoon when the amount of branches etc. coming down meant we called it a day a bit earlier than we would of normally. All grayling were taken on the dry fly, amazing considering there were so many leaves on the surface that the grayling could hardly have seen the flies. Small out of season trout took nymphs. All fish returned. First time on the Colonel's Water, we will definitely be back. The Fishing Passport is an extremely efficient way of trying new waters.

My first day at the fishery and my recent river fishing experience is limited, but I put in an 11 hour shift so obviously disappointed with my catch (one eel, all day)! Lovely stretch of river and conditions seemed good so no excuses but the only other angler on the beat that morning had no joy either. Was it a change in barometric pressure with the approaching storm or that Sahara sand, which also turned the sun into a tangerine about mid-day?

Quite apart from the incredible weather, the fishing was excellent. Started of on the beach where I lost two fish before landing one. Decided to move to the top of the stretch for a bit more shelter from the winds. Had eleven fish from one swim including two over 8lb and one at 9lb 4oz.

A few fish seen in rock pool. Neighbouring angler had two salmon from tail of pool. Water a good height and colour. Great day despite not getting a touch.
