A very difficult days fishing. Arrived on a frosty morning with the river well up and flowing fast. Beautiful spot, chub caught in a slight back flow close in on red maggot. One barbel lost on halibut pellet. Will return in more favorable conditions.

We fished from 09:30 until 16:15. Water temperature hovered at about 8 or 9 degrees all day. A number of trickle-hatches were evident from about mid-morning until late afternoon. However, despite these, the fish seemed reluctant to rise. Using a GRHE bead head, my brother winkled out a nice Grayling from the Glaslyn flats. Earlier on, I managed to ‘fluke’ a seven inch brownie from the Mud pool. I prayed earnestly for a proper hatch and after lunch my prayers were answered; there, at the head of an awkward-to-get-to glide, just beneath an overhanging tree I spotted a good fish rising with almost clockwork regularity. Wading into position I almost lost my life for the river bed is quite treacherous. However, at that moment, such things were the least of my concerns; I was in position, I cast to my fish and hooked it on the second drift down: it was a tiny, three inch Salmon Parr.

Between us we used various nymphing techniques (Czech, French etc.) with two flys. Purple seemed to be the most attractive colour.
Disappointing though as we came across 3 other anglers who said they were there practicing for a competition. Given two were from abroad we got the distinct feeling they did not have day tickets...which p*ssed us off to say the least!

Hard fishing in a beautiful setting. The fishing was tough due to recent rain fall which brought lots of debris down river. We managed to find the fish after lots of searching. We will be back.

Returning for our second day on this beat we decided to concentrate our efforts in the field at the rear of the church. The weather was overcast but not cold and the river level was about 18" above normal and slowly falling.
We fished a variety of baits including luncheon meat, pellet, corn using standard ledger tactics. And it was a welcome surprise when Paul caught a small barbel and a small chub late in the afternoon, on pellet!

This is a great beat with plenty of accessible swims. But it is quite an up hill walk back to the church car park - So best to travel light if you can!

The river is back up to normal flow, it was a bit coloured and running fast. There was a constant stream of olives on the water but absolutely no rising fish until 3.30. I fished 1.5mm tungsten bead nymphs under a bushy klinkhammer all 3 grayling took the nymphs, 10"-15 ½" and surprisingly docile. The afternoon saw some rising fish taking tiny flies and chancing them being grayling I fished size 18 para Adams but took a large trout 14" and decided to stop for the day.

5 x grayling 10-14 inches, 2 x chub in the 3-4 pounds range, 3 x out of season trout 9-13 inches, trotting. At 2ft 3 inches and still plenty of colour, the river was higher than I had hoped for and racing along when I arrived. Not much doing to begin with, but as the level dropped and the water cleared a few fish were picked up by searching the slacker areas. Which is exactly what the cormorants and goosanders were doing.

Bright sunny day, frosty morning, 5 grayling up 6" taken on a holy grail, river was low slow and clear had a hatch between 2pm-3pm but rising in some very tricky spots, spooked a very large trout in shallow water. Plenty of dragonflys, wildlife about on this stretch; be back once we have had some rain
