A glorious day by the river, but only the one barbel to show for our efforts. Lots of salmon on the move!

Beautiful stretch of the river Dee, too much water to fish in one day, so concentrated on the gravel runs on the middle beat below Coed Pen-y-Garth. Grayling up to 1lb (+2 small OOST) all very healthy and keen on small weighted nymphs with bright red tags,or purple/pink colours. A colder day than previous ones, river clear and at lower end of normal flow. Despite this grayling feeding freely in shallow as well as deeper water. A lot of fish in this beat, someone with more ability would have caught 3x what I did.Was trying to teach myself Czech/French nymphing to some degree of success. Saw no one else all day and am keen to return and explore the other beats.

Arrived to find the river lower and clearer than in the summer, 2 fished in the end swims past the car park without any joy, I fished in the 1st field & had 2 barbel, the first going 9lb 6oz and the second around 6lb. Both fish came after feeding and resting the swim for an hour.

Fishing:Winter Grayling

Ski thermals, hat and gloves order of the day - very cold bleak day. Started off with klink on dropper and small tungsten nymph in Lady Alexander's Catch - nothing - which has been the story for me all season.
Moved up to Abernant Stream and had 6 grayling between 12" and 16" - all took the klink. One was at the entry point at the tail of the pool and five came from the glide swinging across from the new croys.

River was crystal clear and unrecognisably low. In parts, only a gutter running down the far bank remained. Fishing was generally difficult due to leaves on the surface but despite this I managed to winkle out a few small Grayling and one perfectly marked Brownie all of which succumbed to a size 16 grhe beadhead.

Only the second time ever we have fished this stretch decided to fish opposite ends of the beat to try and locate the fish. Eventually found them in the last field in the deeper water. First fish at 3.00pm, caught on boilies and groundbait feeder. Much more successful overall than my first visit. Will be back next year.

Beat:Pwll y Faedda near Erwood

Fishing:Winter Grayling

No. of Anglers:1

20 x grayling 11-16 inches, 6 x out of season trout, long trotting. I fished until just after lunch - cold initially, but bright later. Another day with virtually no rising grayling, so I didn't regret the decision to go trotting. The grayling are still there, and a very nice average size today with a lot of 15 inch fish. Plenty of salmon crashing about in the river now. Also, one of those dramatic low level flights up the valley by a Chinook today, just hopping over the power lines and I could distinctly see the pilots as it approached. The grayling seemed unaffected by the considerable vibration.
