We were determined to have an evening on this beat in Mayfly time having already fished it earlier in the season. Looking at the webcams the Lugg system was possibly the only part of the catchment fishable on the day and the forecast predicted the houlie that had been blowing for the last 24 hours might subside - well it didn't until about 9.30! But that didn't stop a very pleasant couple of hours evening fishing. No visible hatch or rises early on and a significant chop on the river so minor tactics were implemented - mayfly skating! And very effective too in the shallower runs at the top of pools - 3 nice fish to 14" on this tactic and twice as many lost as the fly was usually downstream at the take. JB then homed in on his favourite run at last knockings - 10.00! - to take two more 14" ers on conventional drifting fly tactics. So that was 5 to hand on the evening - well worth the drive over. Water voles for company too and the full moon with spectacular moonbeams through the clouds on the drive home added to the trip. Many thanks to Wendy in the office for last minute booking - and the web cams along with the rainfall radar web site do make it possible to work out what is fishable with a degree of certainty.

Three double figure carp landed, 3 lost, largest 12lb 12oz. Carp caught on pellet. Lots of evidence of an abundance of small silver fish but difficult to catch as use of maggots is not permitted at this time of year. Great place to fish will come back again in the future.
WUF Note: The maggot restriction (June 16th to Sept 14th) only applies to the river Wye. Still waters do not fall under this byelaw.

All fish taken on weighted nymphs (mainly GRHE & pheasant tails). Largest 14", average 8-10". Conditions far from ideal!! Heavy rain, high winds with very strong gusts. First time on the water but guessing river 12" high judging by plant growth in the margins. Only saw handful of fish rising. Few mayfly hatching. Wet but enjoyable day.

With river moving from 1 ft 3 to 1 ft 6 and the prospect of heavy rain from the threating summer storm it was the first day of Sumer! I throught it was worth an hour with the rod, good cloud cover but guests of wind, never seen such a quantity of swallows and swifts dive bombing the river, great clouds of them! Spectacular.
At 11 am after taking two Shad, the line went solid and suddenly a very strong 18 pounder took off and 20 mins later came safely to the bank, slightly coloured and a small amount of white fugus on the nose, safely returned and followed by 3 lovely wid brown trout who all fought well on the end of a 16 ft salmon rod, driven off the river by 3 pm as the storm approached !

3 caught fishing a duo, 1 caught fishing a dry. Rain and occasional wind made fishing a bit tricky but it was a good day. Some insect life and some fish rising. A gooseander and chicks were on the beat.
