After speaking to Mick on Saturday, he said that the river was not in a good condition to fish so decided to stay at home.

Such a beautiful setting. River very low so wasn't expecting too much action, just wanted a day on the river. My first time on the Lugg. I'm generally an Usk man so enjoyed fishing the smaller river. Started at 8AM and fished upstream of the bridge. Spent time in the deep pool on the bend 150 Meter above the bridge. The odd fish rising but started with a deep fished single nymph, Czech style. Immediately landed a really healthy 1Lb Graying followed by a second a little smaller. Both returned with out them being in any distress. Saw a trout rise to a pale watery (I think) so switched to light colored dry Klink and landed a beautiful brownie just over a 1lb....happy days. Things went quiet again so switched back to nymph and caught another similar sized brownie. I decided that I wouldn't bash this pool to death and spend the rest of the day about 100M further up stream targeting small rising grayling with a variety of dries. Caught about 6 fish. Loads of fun practicing my target casting. Dropped a nymph in the pool down stream and landed a further 1.5lb Grayling. Such a lovely day. Thanks W&UF.

A bright and warm day. River was fairly low, but moving quickly and still quite cool. Started at 0730 and found fish rising in most pools but not sure what they were feeding on - innumerable midges dancing above the water but couldn't see much in the surface film. No luck on various dries from size 12-20, black through to very pale yellow.
Tried nymphs from about 11 and had a handful of pulls in deeper pools. One 9" trout brought to hand and released. Finished around 1pm, lovely morning.

Not a great day for fishing. It was very hot and bright for the most part, contrary to the weather forecast, naturally.... There were salmon showing, but the water temperature was noticeably high, from being in it, so i think they just went down as far as they could go. There were plenty of trout at some point during the day but i could not get them to take either... Always blame the weather..!!!

A warm day with cloud early on, little wind if any. Later on in the afternoon the sun came out and there was a light downstream wind.
I really had to try hard to get these fish despite there being a huge hatch of upwings (sorry I still can't tell the species apart).
I caught the first fish on a heavy nymph which was easily the biggest grayling I've ever caught at about 14 inches on a heavy nymph.
After that I tried various weighted nymphs but it wasn't until I was at the top of the beat that I tried a dry fly, I then caught four fish in quick succession and lost one other that dwarfed the first fish (I knew I was going to lose it after accidentally hooking it as I lifted my fly for the next cast).
Why I didn't try a dry, emerger pattern or even an unweighted nymph before this I have no idea, but as this is only my second fly season we'll put it down to experience.
Overall a lovely day on one of my favourite beats, thanks again WUF.

Bright sunlight with water low and clear made fishing difficult. Thought I had hooked the mother of all trout as it tore off line and ran downstream. Turned out to be a 12 inch brownie foul hooked in the dorsal fin. Oh well. Apart from that and a couple of parr, nothing caught. A beautiful stretch though, so will return when there is more water.
